After picking up the groceries at local stores I know I drove off to Apeldoorn with my car full of supplies and costume. I'd packed half my kitchen utensils and a couple of large pots that I can use on either campfires or gas stoves (we have induction cooking at home so I have separate pans for larps).
The forest hut in Apeldoorn is pretty tiny and I set up my bed in the smallest side room off the main sitting room with the fireplace. With a lot of dust and cobwebs, concrete floors and all the windows boarded up it was a gloomy place, but would function rather nicely as a "cave" in-game.
The kitchen I would be working my magic was tiny as well, although it was claimed to be "fully fitted for 20 person-cooking". There was a bunch of really dirty cups under the sink, a full complement of coffee cups and tea mugs in the cupboard and horrible plastic yellow plates. The pans were less than stellar, the utensils looked like the left-behind remnants of former campers (and thus: incomplete set, no ladles or spatula's!) and there were no bowls anywhere to be found. Luckily I'd brought some of my own. The worst part was that the stove was tiny and could only hold four normal-sized pans in stead of the larger size I'd need to feed 12 meat-eaters and a vegetarian.
Friday night the plan was to have hamburgers, so the people arriving at staggering intervals would have something to eat as soon as they came in, and I set up the side table as a buffet, made coffee and tea (brought my own thermoses as well!) and got a lot of hugs for providing hot food to hungry people in rainy weather.
After going in-character there was a lot of discussion in the main cave, and I am not very good at this. There is a ton of plot that finds their way to the Wildlings and none of it comes directly to me. I could pick it up by tagging along with other Wildling, but mostly the plot is (like the rule system), way over my head. There are those who do find it interesting, so I leave it to them. It's just a bit of a shame that they constantly discuss the plot things for hours on end. (More on this later.)
When I had my fill of a discussion going way over my head, I went outside for a fresh nose and poked Stone Boar to come along. Being one of three non-magic users, I figured he could be missed and he looked a bit bored.
"Wanted to ask question." I started. "You know Howl and Windsong mates."
"Yes." Stone Boar said. Wildling shortspeak is like this. Very to-the-point. He could just as easily have said "Of course." which would have been the more eloquent option.
"Well, have been Yearmates for a year and year is up."
"Yes."
"Now what?" I asked.
"Well, can decide go separate ways." Stone Boar said, matter-of-factly.
"Or...?"
"Can decide be Yearmate again." Everything about Wildling speak is actually rather matter-of-factly.
"Or...?"
"Can decide be Lifemate." said Stone Boar finally.
At this point, Howl stepped outside to smoke and joined us.
"Have asked Stone Boar." I said. "About being Yearmates."
"Ah, yes;" Howl said, and he turned to Stone Boar; "What happen after year ends?"
"Well, can decide was fun and go separate ways." Stone Boar said again.
"Or...?" Howl replied. I smiled that his reply was the same as mine, a rather impatient question because it was obviously not what we both wanted.
"Or be Yearmate again." Stone Boar was being really
very patient with us.
"Or...?"
"Or decide be Lifemate."
"Yes, but how?" Howl replied; "How decide be Lifemate? Is going to Alpha to declare? Say to clan? "
"Well, is feeling." Stone Boar said, putting his hand to his heart. "Is knowing not wanting to be without other. Is knowing never want be apart. Then just decide." He shrugged.
Howl glanced at me, wonderment in his eyes. Maybe it was time to have a little talk, just the two of us. But right that moment, Black Snow stepped outside and joined the three of us. "What talking about?" he asked.
"Well;" Howl started.
"Will be over here!" I interjected. "Listening to trees. They singing." And I hurried off.
A little while later, Black Snow found me. "Why be ashamed of talking about Howl?"
"Not ashamed of Howl, love him very much. But Black Snow asked to be Yearmate of Windsong also. Is difficult to talk to Black Snow about this."
In all honesty, I still felt for Black Snow, but I wasn't sure
what I really felt about him. Maybe I just wanted to comfort him in his grief, but would that be wise? Was Black Snow still morning Margok, or was he really interested in Windsong? There was no clear answer, and I wouldn't find it that night, or the next either.
When I returned inside the rest of the Wildlings were talking to our guests, Theo, Nine and Eleven, about coupling. Apparantly, the two had never had sex before and had no idea how one would find a mate. Stone Boar was talking, and Howl and the others were paying rapt attention. I snuggled up to Howl, sitting slightly behind him so I could rest my cheek on his shoulder.
Educating our guests on the ritual of finding a mate and "playing the woman like an instrument. No, not like Trumpet..." was hilarious though!
SaturdayThe weather was absolutely beautiful, so right after providing everyone except our one vegetarian with bacon and eggs I asked if someone wanted to take a little stroll in the forest. Rainstorm joined me and I ran back to grab my camera.
The forest was hauntingly beautiful and there were a ton of mushrooms. The oak trees were yellow and red, the beech trees majestic. It was glorious to be out in the woods, and we stopped for picture posing often. Rainstorm was kind enough to take a very good picture of Windsong, so I now finally have a good portrait of her being her dreamy self.

When we got back to the cave, the others were on the other side, in a nice clearing. Stone Boar and Nine and Thundercloud were training, with Howl watching intently. Firestorm and Black Snow were having a discussion, and I took the time to geek out with my camera and took a lot of pictures.
Then it was time to get the dinner started. The Babi Ketjap needed three hours or so, and it was already three o'clock. I went to work quickly, having put the pork and the soy parts into a marinade the previous night. For our vegetarian ("Why Howling Moon invite guest not eating MEAT?!") I would stir-fry paksoy and mushrooms later, but the Babi Ketjap needed to get underway. I put the three kilo of green beans in the middle of the group with some knives, and they started cutting the tips off for me. Once the pork was slowly cooking, I peeled and sliced cucumbers for the cucumber salad and prepared the vegetables for the vegetarian stir-fry. But the time it was a quarter past four, all the preparations were done and the kitchen was neat again. The discussion had moved to the outside fire pit, so I sat down with a much-needed cup of tea.
An hour later, I got the rice going and afterwards started boiling the two pans of beans, cursing the small stove (couldn't even cook the rice and beans at the same time, because the four pans didn't all fit onto the stove at the same time!). The sideboard was again used as a buffet table, and I kept re-arranging everything to make everything fit in the right order. Finally, there was rice, babi ketjap, regular green beans, and stir-fried sayur beans (spicy and hot!), cucumber salad, atjar tjampoer, fried onions, kroepoek and cassave chips. Once Pieter had had his fill I added the vegetarian dish to the table.
We ate around the campfire, and people went back two or three times, there was plenty of food. There was a wee bit of babi ketjap left, so portion-wise I took note of how much was left over (most of the cucumber salad!) and cleared the buffet. Two of our guests were the brave heroes tackling the dishes.
Inside, there was a discussion raging on about infiltrating a city of Night Lords (or Sun Lords, it was way over my head again), and I remarked "Haven't we discussed this yesterday?" Apparantly, we will be infiltrating
several enemy cities and there will be hand signals. Or something.
Howl and I finally had our talk, and he suggested carefully we would be Yearmates for another year. So that was settled. It was kind of scary, because although I really like Howl, maybe it is still too soon to become Lifemates. I was glad to see Firestorm having a good talk with Howl about how having cubs works, because he was kind of disappointed there were no cubs yet.
The rest of the evening we theorised about how Night Lords were like cats and Sun Lords were like dogs, and we played a lot of dice games. I even won one!
SundayWe still had hamburgers left-over so it was almost full English breakfast with bacon & eggs, hamburgers and marmelade. After breakfast I left all the breakfast thingies on the table but started cleaning the kitchen and gathering my utensils and pans. And with that, my work was done.
Cooking for the group was great fun, and it's really right in Windsong's character to be the emotional mother and the cook. It gets me a lot of respect from the guests as well (Eleven is my biggest fan!) but I miss a lot of the game. I'm not sure that's a bad thing though, one of the things I really hate is the endless raking over plot points. For a group of quick-deciding lightning-reflexes no-nonsense beings, we sure do a lot of ball-scratching and navel-gazing.
I am trying to find my niche in all this, and succeeding. Windsong thinks her status is that she's the lowest Snow Hunter, right above Thundercloud and Howl and Stone Boar the non-Snow Hunters, who she socialises a lot with. But maybe she will be surprised one day to find out where she really stands.
Not enough Noranti-ing this time, as I was alone in the kitchen and working, but I'll make it up next time. I hope to go to Booyah in November!
