Instead of stressing over making a Browncoat (see icon) I chose to spend my time relaxedly painting a Nerf gun. After all, once we unpacked the box of Nerf items we have (ready to paint, in some cases already partially base-coated or disassembeled or both) I realised that Hugo wasn't quite done yet.

Now that I spent some time working on this, I realise Ragar was right all along: it can be quite relaxing to spend your evening brushing just a tiny brush of two whole hairs of paint down the side of something plasticy. Now, I'm not saying I'm going to ever try Warhammer (I said that about chainmailing too, years back!)...

I entered the Games Workshop store. The other store I had found underway did not have any metallic paints...
"Hi, can I help you get started?" the guy behind the counter, named Thieme if his namesign was to be believed, asked.
I snorted. "Get started?" The guy didn't react. "Yeah, I need some paints to finish modding my nerfs." This can be a real show-stopper, if Conversation Participant does not speak fluent Gamernese.
"What colours would you like?" Thieme asked.
"Brassy Brass and Tinny Tin, if you have them. And Boltgun Metal..." I browsed the metallics, proving my point of not being a total n00b if I knew
Warhammer Paints by name
Only days later did I realise that this Thieme-I-sometimes-do-vampire-larp-Thieme was once Thieme-from-Judit-Thieme.

...but I really don't intend to get another hobby.

I'll leave you with some close-ups. You can see, Hugo has Gone Places and Kicked Their Asses While He Was At It.

Hugo

Hugo2

Note: Yes, Hugo is named after a certain Paladin of Ranaa. You see, this kind of big gun is very blunt, not very discreet, and pretty much silences any argument it gets involved in. So pretty much like [livejournal.com profile] cabaray's character.
And I mean that in the best possible way.

I still suck at sketching.

Imagine the elf ears, y'all.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] muizenstaartje we visited Amsterdam today. The Hermitage had an exhibition "At the Russian Court" covering most of the 19th century and a bit of the whereabouts.
Despite rain, a long, long line to get into the museum and the obvious crowds we still had a great time. The exhibition was marvelous, with loads and loads of lovely court gowns, dresses, and uniforms. But there was more!

Huge, and I do mean huge portraits of the Czars and their wives. Paintings of the palaces, the palace grounds, the balls, a panorama of the St.Petersburg, portraits of the children.
And then there were the accessoiries. All the silverware that was used in the bedroom! The throne! Snuff boxes! Shoes! Fans! Jewelry! A teddy bear!

St.Petersburg: Maskerade costume of Ksenia Aleksandrovna (1903). Image thanks to the Hermitage!

I was completely blown away by the sheer amount of gold tassels, fringe, gold and silver embroidery, pearls, more embroidery. If I thought larp costumes could be gaudy...well, they'd be terribly, terribly underdressed at the Russian court. (heh)

I was face-to-face with no less than two Worth gowns. I made a sketch of one, because it was so ingenously designed. A-symmetrical lace running from the right shoulder to the left waist. The lace on the left shouder disappearing under the pleats of pink silk. At the right knee, the lace was 'pulled up' into the side seam, splashing down like a waterfall. There were pleats at the center front of the bodice. The silk had a woven pattern, which was matched at the seams to create an intricate pattern. When I was half-way in my sketch, I read that it was a Worth gown. Ah!

There were other gorgeous costumes too. The 1910s green silk and velvet and chiffon dress with a black fringe with a curious overlap. The gorgeous pink silk gown with green velvet 'flower' blossoming up at the bodice, with loads of embroidered bouquets next to the woven flowers of the silk. The black and white striped gown with the perfectly placed darts. And my favorite: the plum Worth gown I can't find an image of. Plum (or brown) velvet, with a standing collar. A big embroidered trim going down from the left shoulder, narrowing towards the waist, and going down the left leg in two seperate guards. I can't find an image online and I really don't want to scan it because I'm harbouring secret thoughts about making it a project. *sigh*

Of course it helped that the silhouette at that time concurs with our current standards of beauty: a slim waistline, long legs, and an ample bosom. Some of the waistlines were scary thin. And many, many gowns were created in Russia, at local ateliers. Some were created in France, like the Worth gowns. There was also a ceremonial dress from the Order of the Garter!

Absolutely had an amazing time at the exhibit, and we didn't get to see it all in one afternoon. I really need to go back and drool at all those lovely gowns and uniforms.
I was cheesed that I wasn't allowed to take pictures, even though I could very easily switch the flash off. I was even more cheesed when I saw someone take pictures after all (no flash, but still).

And now I know: you can never have too much trim & tassels.
So...when are we going again?

Candles

I'm experimenting with the kind of candles I can make. I've one good mold for it, which I got from [livejournal.com profile] sjuuls. Outside that, I am without molds. So I tried glasses. I have one glass that creates a conical candle that gets wider towards the top. It's desperately ugly, but it works in a way (i.e. a romantic night in the bedroom only requires light from flames from various candles, and I don't care the ones on the bookcase are ugly because there's a klamboe in between anyway).
But today I was experimenting on my so-called "blood'n'bones" candles. They're made from pieces of old white candles (like the stuff that remains in the bottom of tealights when the wicks die out on you), crumpled up. And then I pour liquid red wax over it. Works like a charm in the mold I have.

I figured if I took a longdrink glass (tip from my stepdad) I could make a long narrow candle, in this style. But since there's no seeing whether the inside of the glass is suitable until you make a candle with it, I sort of didn't know what to expect. What I got was the most godugly candle I've ever made.

XD

It can't even stand up on its own for more than two seconds, it has to be poked on a pin, or molten on the underside.
So that longdrink glass is out. Next please....Let's see if I can create some more "A-Wizard's-Staff-Has-A-Knob-On-The-End"-like candles.

Wat zullen we drinken, zeven dagen lang... [koffieeeee]

Trying to learn something more of Japanese Calligraphy. I found a great site, which translates western names to Japanese. Funny how Anna and Jane mean the same thing "yuuga"; gracious.
It would be nice to be able to use western and japanese calligraphy. Up until now I've focused on 'old' fonts. Cloister Black (the font also used in Sword & Ink quite often) is my favourite for capitals. But I fear I must learn Japanese before I can practice its calligraphy.

I'm going to meet up with Pluis in an hour or so for coffee and so he can lend me the latex skull we need for the shoot Sunday. I'm excited to go. Whee!

I've got a sore shoulder, from sleeping too long on my side, cocking up the pillow, or something. You can't believe what kind of feeling that gives me. It's relief, because it's an innocent strain, in stead of the ache in the lower back that has been haunting me. My back is getting better, but slowly. I hardly feel it during normal actions any more, but long walks and trips to the supermarket do make me remember what it's like. Where I stand. But there is - if slow - progress.

This week, a teacher was shot in Den Haag by a seventeen year old boy. It's the first time in Holland a person was shot in a school, and the social impact this is having is immense, beyond belief really. On radio Rijnmond, the local station, there was a show where callers could give their opinions, and I heard about a demonstration saying terrible things about the boy who shot the teacher. The boy happened to be someone who originates from another part of the world; we have a nice word which is often used in foul ways for it: allochtoon. I am very sad because of the man being shot, and I can not justify what the boy has done, but I do think he needs some protection. We can't jump on him like a pack of wolves and tear him apart, and everyone else who happens to be an allochtoon. Yesterday on the news I saw that the kids from that school were mostly allochtoon, and okay, maybe it was wrong for the reporters to not ask a single autochtoon (someone of dutch origin), and they all had definite opinions, were very well spoken, and all had significantly more brains than the dutch male who won the big lottery prize in Kinderdijk two weeks back.

But after all, we all judge on looks. I realized, after I came back from Veenendaals confinement to the big city with its diversity, that I wasn't used to be surrounded by people of different nationality and looks anymore. In Veenendaal and Ede, people are either autochtone christians, autochtone riot-youth, or allochtone riotyouth. That's all you ever hear about. Here, there are so many more 'classes' and I feel ashamed I think of this that way. After all we are all only human and everyone deserves a chance. Still, I do not feel safe on the streets, and the incident with the smoker in the metro a month or so ago didn't help at all.
I also discussed this with my mother, and she thinks the main problem isn't so much that the kids play video games, but more that the parents don't have time for their kids anymore.
Respect and discipline are all gone, and the police often can't or won't do nothing when they see someone. If someone tries to smuggle coke, and they have two kilos on them, they get to go free with the statement 'if you had 2.5 kilos on you, you'd have been in big trouble'. Yeah, that'll teach 'em!

Closely connected to this: Bowling for Columbine. See that. It's gooood.

I went to Lekkerkerk with my mom yesterday, after discussing stuff like this during eating french fries. She wanted me to come along to pottery class, and indeed did I have fun! When it comes to clay, turns out I can be a very patient person. First we kneaded the bubbles of air out of the clay, and then you throw (actually we used the word 'smijten' pr: smite-uhn) the clay on the turning disc. I had the non-electrical one (which suits be better than one you just flick the on switch which just takes all authenticy out of it. It's a disc of wood below a stool, connected to a stone disc at stomach-height). You never kick the disc around and use your hands at the same time so this avoids tight muscles I think. If you touch the clay, the disc will slow down, and before your muscles cramp up, you have to kick again, but you can't kick and work the clay at the same time, so you relax a bit.
First you try to center the clay, by placing your elbows on your legs or pressing them to your side, and then you fold wet hands around the clay. It will wobble your hands around but if you keep those in place, slowly you fold the clay to the center of the disc. After this, with your thumbs close together you start making a hole in the middle. If you make it too wide, it will surely become a dish or plate. So I kept them close together. After this you lock your thumbs together in the hollow between thumb and index finger, and use your index and middle finger of both hands to 'pull up' the clay, so the thing you're making becomes higher, and the walls become thinner. You have to be really careful, if the clay is too wet, or the walls to thin, or it's unbalanced, you'll lose control over the clay and you must start over.
When you're done, you carefully loosen the clay from the disc, and put it on a wooden plank. Then it dries up for a week, and you equalize the bottom and top, scraping a thin layer off it. Then it gets baked the first time 'buiscitbake', and the finish can go on. Then it gets a second bake. So it will be four weeks until I have it back.

I made something looking like this. The foot isn't so narrow, but the inside goes on a long way down, into the foot. I hope to be able to use it for larp.
I'm very satisfied about what I made, even if my trousers look like I've been remodelling someone's appartment.

Back in Veenendaal. Reini and I shared ph00d together (soup and bread that is) which is a real bonding ritual for us. We talked. It was fun. For the week, it's just the two of us here, and that's a good thing. Gives us some time to clear the house for the invasion of new roomies soon. Household chores. Finding of the ironing iron and the changing of the light bulbs, making and consuming of the coffee.

Congratulations to my IRL brother, may he in the coming year of his life return my calls.

In other news, NaNo. It's not as bad as I'd expected, with 1442 words I'm almost to my 1-day word count after four days. Need to write up to 6667 words today to get today's quota. I'll probably never make it and I'll hate the shit I write but it's still worth a very damn good try.

New drawing: DEATH with cat[s]. Pratchett is very inspiring.
Plans: hopefully tomorrow Cloudman (Pluis) will come over, no news from him, left a message.
Then, practice with Tommies. Should be interesting. Have put lyrics and tablature in set-list order. Have to pay for practice, which will require some advance from my pay check. I'm at -30 euro right now, which is impossible for my account since I can't go into the minus region, but it's there anyway. I'll have to dip into my savings until the pay check comes. Not so long now. Two-hundred something. I worked enough.

Memo to me: tiara and distortion pedal.

Wednesday night to NoKey's and then take outfit piccies. I wonder what else I'll bring (except my NaNo work). Maybe small project like JackieKennedy dress. I decided to make it different. NoKey said something along the lines that it made me look like a cardboard box or something. Truth be told, I do prefer wide skirts indeed. So, a change is coming up there.
Annatrousers and Flamencodress are large projects, too large for just those two days I'll be spending at NoKey's.

Damn. Fungus in my lemonade-syrup. Opened that bottle just last week.
'Pink Floyd is near-genius' Erik said. I totally agree.
So random thoughts need random things. I might work on some NaNo and then work on some pictures and then work on some more NaNo.
After all, how hard can 50,000 words be?

Okay! That’s IT!

No more woodcarving for me.

At least until my thumb has healed again. Right next to my last cut. Slice and dice-like. *disgusted grin*

Hopefully this post is more sensible than the other one.
I drew a raven ["Quoth the raven - nevermore"] on a bust of Athena for the Dreamwalker. He asked for it and I am quite pleased with it. Also drew a face in stone as guardian of a gate. All I need to add are the bricks and then I'm done (not in the face but in the gate-wall).

Woodworks published again! Yeuy!

I'll work on my website and frequent the forums of this larpsite. Three and a half hours to spill. I might even work on that ethics article that is due. But I've been wanting to work on that site for a while now and I have some nice idea's.

It seems I have been slacking the last few Saturdays. Not making any entries. Tsjeeesj!
Well, I had my reasons ofcourse and for yesterday it was another Dutch Elfwood meeting. I pleased me to find Mousetail (to translate her nickname accordingly) willing to meet up early to visit a market filled with fabric in the morning.
After a easy night working in the kitchen at Gonzales on Friday (it was so quiet I cleaned some of the kitchen cupboards) I was in bed at 1.30 and up again Saturday morning 8 o’clock sharp.

The train trip to Utrecht flew by instantly and I met up with Mousetail. She knew more or less where the market would be and we found it without trouble. There were many stands with fabrics of 1 euro per meter. Which is way way cheapo. We sniffed around the stands and fondled more fabric than a greedy dwarf does his treasure.

I called [livejournal.com profile] ozjish because I had promised to make him a tunic and I needed to see what would look good on him. Hearing him again was good, I could picture him well, and I bought 2 types of fabric for his tunics. They’ll be pretty.
And for myself I bought some hairy (fake) fur-like fabric for a barbarian tunic. Something I’ve, deep in my heart, always wanted to have. That was 1 euro per meter. *Greedy Grin*

Then we had lunch at the V&D. I noticed Mousetail tried to eat very neat, just like me. Like we were trying to make a good impression on eachother or something. And the sandwiches we had just couldn’t be eaten neatly. So when I noticed we were both trying hard not to spill or look sloppy, I firmly set my elbows on the table, took my sandwich in both hands and bit deep. I’ve known her for over a year. Mousetail and I are in larps together, where she plays a man transformed to a woman, and I play a man-like city guard, so trying hard not to be messy is so…illogical!

She followed my lead, glad to say, and after we ate we started drawing already. We drew one pre-meet drawing and then shopped for pencils. *evil grin* Pencils gooood!

“Teach me passion for I fear it’s gone”

The second part of the day was filled with Dutchelfwood. In the main hall of Utrecht Central Station, we met up with other Dutchelfwooders. Wouter and Henning and Sebastiaan were discussing Shivers larp, and more and more DEW’ers were gathering around the flag.
It was fun meeting Shu, Okke, Emanuel, and Cindy, and fun seeing them all again. Once in the Florin and Firkin, we started drawing. I lost count at two (even though I really wanted to keep count of how much I drew, I forgot to count after two…silly me). I drew a lot of good things. I had my day. I am most proud of the drawing I made for Okke, I guess. It’s the one I made last, and has a crying woman, with beautiful shading. A real tearjerker emotion-filled picture. Ofcourse joy and tears go hand in hand.

Wouter tricked me into making the tunics for Shivers for him (5) and he got everybody else and me really enthusiastic about larp again. The passion for creativity (in making costumes and props) has been awakened by Wouter and Henning and Okke and not least Arjen, who brought a self-made dagger. I asked him what his prices were but he didn’t tell. Said he wasn’t ready to start making stuff for sale. I guess I have to ask XB to make me one then. I guess a ranger must have a dagger. And I’ll be playing a ranger in April, at Shivers.

Drawing count:

  1. Mousetail: mouselady trying to find something useful to say
  2. Arjen: Inferno ‘In nomine sanguinis’
  3. Cynthia: Mindflayer
  4. Petra: Dragon
  5. Okke: Sad orc
  6. Merrick: Bird
  7. Coen: Stallion and Rider trying to find a strategically placed bush and castle
  8. Eline: ‘Nail and Hair’
  9. Merrick: Tribal
  10. Okke: Floating Vampire
  11. Mark: ‘Nail and Hair’ : Woman with palantir.

Niiiice.
To explain #7, I drew a horse in Eline’s dummy. (stupid, because Eline considers herself to be Mistress Of Horsedrawings). I hid the front legs behind a Strategically Placed bush, the ass (of the horse) behind a Strategically Placed cloak, and drew a Strategically Placed castle to draw the attention away from the horse and rider, and a Strategically Placed tree next to the Strategically Placed castle to draw the attention away from the castle. It raised quite some laughter.

I’m really looking forward to next weekend, not just because the exams will be over by then, but also because I’ll see Henning and Shu (craaaaazy woman) again on the workshop. Yupyup. Passion’s back.

I just remembered I also bought two more ‘witchplants’ as I call them. Sage [Salvia officinalis] and Peppermint [Mentha x Pipertita]

I drew a lot of good stuff + one badstuff: a drag-ogre for William Li (Yes, the William Li. I thouched him, I did wash my hand and will you now please leave the poor bloak alone?)

According to Tjerk a real Henning Jansen is better than a real William Li. To which I might agree, but I’m not sure yet. I need more material in my dummy to compare. *grin*
I obtained (in chronological order) a real:

  • poem from The Roach
  • William Tang drawing
  • Marjolein Gulinsky drawing (aw…so cute….can we kill it: that kind of drawing) [Please do notice that I refrain from saying anything about Marjolein Gul herself!!!!!!!!!!!]
  • Marius Ernst drawing [yeah, drawing!]
  • poem from Tjerk
  • Suzan Bongers drawing
  • Janou Brouwer drawing
  • Michiel drawing
  • Marloes Bongers drawing
  • Eline Spek drawing: Verdus Equus [yaaaaaay!]
  • William Li drawing
  • Alex Aal drawing

Very happy indeed with some of the stuff I drew as well. I might be improving.

Just spent plusminus 2 hours on and off manipulating my picture for Elfwood. I made 4, 2 of which I am really fond. Those have 2 poems in the foreground (Torn and Undreamt). the other two have an ecoline background.

Worried about my pictures. I wonder if they'll be accepted. My fairies will, of that I am sure. Second fairy is as good as done! Will scan tomorrow.

Murmurment: [something I was dreaming about]:
How about when I stand near the coffeemachine in school. My bag near me, just standing there. Then, this guy just walks up to me and gives me the most tender kiss...just like that. Sigh.

Yes. That is why it's called a murmurment.
I saw a great picture of Maarten (the guy who played the piano for me) in the school paper. He writes for it. I didn't have the chance yet to let him read 'Inspired', that poem of
mine.
And yes, I do associate that particular murmurment with Maarten. Call it wishful thinking. *Wink* * Giggle*

Today I’ll have a test from Language Control, which is not fun. It’s about etymology (where words come from) and style (double denial: I have not denied that). Sigh. There’s not that much learning involved, but for Wednesday (the BIG test) there is.

And I suck in discipline. I never pick up my books when I am supposed to. I clean my room, play some guitar, play a game, watch tv and oops: bedtime.

I did draw some great pictures this weekend. I had sort of an image in my head (sometimes with pictures, I think in images. It would be an elven bowman (I always try to draw elven bowmen, but somehow I never get them right. I need to marry one before I can, I suppose). I could just see the picture in my head, as if Henning had drawn it. First with pencil, later with pen. And I can’t normally work with pen.

So I tried, and I did make a great picture which looks like Adrian in a way! Lol, I’ve been watching that new video from No Doubt too much! But after the Black Mohawk elf, I drew some weapons. I can never get a bow or axe right when my picture-person has to hold it in his hand, but apart….wow. They are the best. All in all, I drew (in order of how much I like them):
“Fantasy Weapons”: Bow, axe, arrowtip.
“Unicorn Lizard”: Crossover between Unicorn, Horse, Dragon and Lizard. Or something.
“Black Mohawk Elf” : Elf with mohawk and great ears!
“Baby Dragon”: Yay, a dragon! It’s just a baby and from here on I went in error with size!
“How does an orc pick it’s nose”: fun, but too much white
“What did I step in now?”: Some sort of knight with strange garments stepping into some groce creature’s mouth.

From the baby dragon onwards, I drew too large. With pencil that is not such big a deal, but with a pen it is. There’s too much white in the drawings, and way not enough shadings to my liking.
The most funny part is that I drew “How does an orc pick it’s nose” in the middle of the night. It is fun to have a picture in your mind.

My creative mind is working over-hours. In the middle of the night I wake up and I have to write or draw! It’s strange, especially because I can remember writing a piece of a songtext, but I can’t remember the exact thing. And I have never had idea’s for a drawing in this manner. Not that I see what I want it to be. Not at all.
