Taking this along on our train trip to London was a wonderful idea, and by the time we got back it was just a matter of finishing the last bits. I never got around to posting about it here, but the Snowflake jumper is done, and I've already worn it to two visits to various parents around the Netherlands.
The best part about a warm wool jumper is that it's wonderful to sit around in, as you often do when visiting parents, and you don't get cold.

Aside from that, it's a pretty dang spiffy jumper, and I am very happy I started over in January. Having picked up gaming most evenings I don't spend nearly as much time knitting, so this took me 9 months and two weeks to finish all in all.



This was knit from the top down, and I started out with a size M neckline, kept increasing until I hit the stitch count for size L, and then after the waist shaping continued increasing to a size XL for the hips. The fit is lovely, and I couldn't be happier!
I omitted the buttons at the neckline and just knitted the lace yoke in the round. I might just have to make this one again with a DK yarn at some point.

Zoals altijd wel vaker gaat niets zo soepel als je hoopt. Zo ook De VerHerVerPoging van Project Snowflake. Mijn eerste poging werd afgetrokken, de wol was weer in bolletjesvorm, en ik had de boord al vrij snel gebreid. Daarna het kant-gedeelte. Och, wat heb ik daarmee geworsteld. Volgens mij ben ik wel drie keer opnieuw begonnen (aan het kant-gedeelte). Maar op een bepaald moment raakte ik in de cadans. Voor deze trui zit er een bepaalde logica in het patroon, en als je eenmaal een herkenbaar stukje kant al hebt, is het vrij eenvoudig om te zien hoe het in de volgende toer gebreid moet worden. Ik denk dat rond toer 6 of 8 ik wel weer op dat punt was aangekomen.

Het project ging zelfs mee naar de Nieuwjaarsgroet in Bergen, en ik breide een record. Kant breien op een sociale middag? Dat ging best goed! Boven verwachting goed zelfs.
Na het kant en de twee laatste toeren in donkerblauw kon ik wisselen naar de paarse bolletjes en een iets grotere naald. Ik brei de trui met minimaal vijf verschillende verfbaden (drie van de paarse en twee van de donkerblauwe). Omdat het een fingering-weight garen is en ik twee draden tegelijk brei, is daar makkelijk in te mixen. Met de winterse avonden en het gebrek aan licht was het moeilijk te zien welk bolletje bij welk verfbad hoorde, maar ik had tijdens Den Eersten Pooghing al geprobeerd af en toe van bol te wisseln, dus ik had een aantal kleinere en grotere bolletjes en zelfs nog een onaangebroken volledige streng.

Vlak na het kant-gedeelte liet ik mijn hoofd over de short rows gaan. Ik ben niet zo'n fan van truien die in het rond gebreid worden en geen rekening houden dat je de hals op de rug een stuk hoger wilt hebben dan aan de voorkant. Als je daar geen rekening mee houdt, heb je dus altijd een trui die aanvoelt alsof je hem achterstevoren aanhebt. Het veranker-punt ligt namelijk onder de arm - daar stabiliseert het gebreide zich. Of beter gezegd: onder de arm komen voorpand en achterpand samen, en als je er geen rekening mee houdt ligt je achterhals dus op dezelfde hoogte als de voorhals en dat is verdomde koud.
Eén manier om dit op de op te lossen zijn verkorte toeren (in het Engels: short rows). In de Boden trui kwam ik daar voor het eerste mee in aanraking en dat was briljant. Je breit dan verkorte toeren en stopt eventjes met helemaal in het rond breien. Als je dus vanaf onder de arm meet: dan wordt de achterkant hoger dan de voorkant en krijg je geen koude rug.

Den Eerschten Maal breide ik de verkorte toeren direct na het lace gedeelte. Dat betekende een hoop gepuzzel. Je bent namelijk veel meer aan de achterkant aan het breien en daar dus ook aan het meerderen, terwijl de voorkant even vergeten wordt. Daarom was op een bepaald moment de achterkant al breed genoeg, maar moet ik aan de voorkant nog meerderen. Erg verwarrend.

Ik vroeg me af in hoeverre dat eigenlijk nodig was. Maakt het daadwerkelijk uit of je de verkorte toeren tijdens het meerderen doet, of mag het ook daarna?
En eigenlijk....nee, het maakt niet uit. Zolang je de verkorte toeren maar uitvoert voordat je de mouwen afsplitst van de rest van je breiwerk. Voordat je het voorpand dus onder de arm 'vastmaakt' aan het achterpand.

Het meerderen is nu klaar. Ik heb het juiste aantal steken op de naald staan en volgens het patroon moet ik nu de steken voor de mouwen afsplitsen, maar dit is het moment dat ik eigenwijs mijn short rows ga doen. De grote vraag is dus: hoeveel dan?

Als referentie pakte ik het Boden patroon er weer bij. Ik schrok een beetje van hoe vreselijk veel short rows ze deden...en ik weet niet zeker of ik er echt zoveel nodig zou hebben. Het zijn maar liefst 12 toeren short rows en vervolgens nog eens 6 herhalingen van rij 9 & 10. Dat lijkt me een beetje veel. Zeker als je bedenkt dat de Boden in Aran-dikte garen wordt gebreid, dat is nog een tikkeltje dikker dan DK en wordt op naalden 5 mm gebreid in plaats van 4 mm die ik nu gebruik.

Maar ach, waarom ook niet? Ik kan altijd weer een stuk afhalen.
Het belangrijkste op dit moment is dat ik even bij dit project blijf en niet over spring naar de volgende sok om te breien, hoe verleidelijk die gedachte ook is. Ik wil heel graag een indicatie van hoe lang ik over een trui breien doe. Tot nu toe ben ik 1 maand en 2 dagen bezig.

After parking the sleeve stitches on a separate cable it's a good moment to start fitting! Knitting a jumper all in one go is an interesting adventure and with the alterations (short rows on the back neck) and with a lace yoke that might throw the sizing off, it's never too early to really get a good look at how stuff is fitting.
In an attempt to pull the lace 'open' a bit more so it's more visible, it just looks like I'm holding my boobs. Awesome.

Of course the side-front has an opening just throwing the fit off a bit but as far as I can tell the added rows on the back neck have really dropped the front neck quite a bit. I don't mind that at all, I'd rather have a lower front than a cold neck.
I'm curious to see what the neckline will look like with the placket in place, but there's no way I will get around to that any time soon. As it is I am mixing up dye baths to get DK yarn from two skeins of sock-weight. All my yarn is tied up in this project at the moment.

I've progressed far enough to be able to pick this up during my roleplaying sessions again without fearing frogging everything I have done during the session the next day, so that's definitely a good thing.
Just a little more and then I can start on the waist shaping. This project does the shaping in the underarm 'seam', so I am doubly happy I'd already marked the center stitch under the arm. Just a little while to go...

The start of the Snowflake jumper is going to be a lace yoke - and I've been struggling a bit with it. After the initial band of seed stitches there's an ambiguous instruction: "knit, increasing 32 sts evenly spaced". On a start of 130 stitches....I was a bit stumped. That's increasing a lot of stitches, so how would I go about that?
I first divided the 130 stitches by the 32 stitches I would need to increase.... 130/32 = 4.065.
So....increase every fourth stitch? But then, would that mean I would need to do my final increase after the final stitch of the row? Of course I lost count a couple of times as well.

I somehow managed, although at this time I am doubtful that I managed it correctly. After getting to row 15 of the 32 rows of the lace yoke, I needed to frog back a good bit. Then I came to row 17 and found that one of my 'sections' of lace had the wrong number of stitches in it. I un-knit several rows of lace but couldn't find where I'd gone wrong. It all looked fine but I still had one stitch too many in that section. It wasn't even that I'd moved a section marker over and the next section had one stitch too few, I just couldn't figure it out!
This week after much un-knitting and trying my best to figure out the problem, I frogged back to just after the seed stitch portion of the neck band and I am again faced with the increase math. Now, how did I do this the first time around? I don't remember.

I just need to figure out how to best do the increases again using this knitting increase calculator, and counting my stitches a couple of more times (I've been struggling with this far more than I should, to be honest!).
One thing that is also bothering me is this needle -- an Addi circular with a really long cable that doesn't want to 'behave properly'. I might change that out to my HiyaHiya sharps instead, see if that works better. And then it's once more into the breech!
