The Adventures of Public Transport
Jul. 16th, 2014 09:38 pmNow that the A50 is closed for maintenance, I thought I'd try out public transport to get to work. Yesterday I went to the podotherapist (the foot guy) and ended up in a bit of a traffic jam because of it (the roadworks, not the foot guy). Of course I knew about the roadworks, but I was early enough on the road to be at work in time.
Today I went by bus. I walked to the nearby bus stop, took out my knitting and had a decent 45 minute commute to work, just as planned. It's quite long when compared to my usual commute over the Ring of Eindhoven which is a whopping 17 minutes.
This afternoon I went home. Or at least, I tried to. I saw the 16:58 bus go by the store as we were just closing down, but I wasn't worried as there are a number of buses going from Son to Eindhoven.
The 17:09 bus was nowhere to be seen. There was no decent explanation for it. It just never showed up.
The first bus to arrive was the 17:29 bus to Ekkersrijt. When I finally got to the Eindhoven train station, where I have to switch buses, it was 17:50. The first bus to go towards Genderbeemd (my neighbourhood) would go at 18:11. There are four lines passing near my house, but I still had to wait 20 minutes.
I bought an ice cream, because I was hot, hungry and thirsty and splurged on half a liter of milk at the AH to Go. I wasn't in the mood to walk by the supermarket on the way home anymore.
At 18:29 I arrived at the bus stop. Of my total 1½ hour commute I had been on a bus for a whopping 40 minutes. The rest was just standing around with my proverbial carrot in my proverbial mittens.
That's 50 minutes of ball-scratching time I'm never getting back, damn you.
Yes, public transport is lovely and it gets you there. It's not fast (at all) and you get to relax while you're cooped up in a bus you hope has air conditioning.
How I love my golden second boyfriend Aurum. No airco. Music as loud as I want it. And I get to be in a traffic jam that will add maybe just 10 minutes to my whole trip. Hey, I can't do any knitting, but I'll take it over a commute by bus any day.
