Klusupdate
Sep. 12th, 2011 10:56 amFriday was spent running around a wee bit too much and visiting my father in the hospital twice. He was cheerful and unfased by the treatment, so I hope that will last. Brought him two books to read, but when I got home from the second visit I found NoKey in bed without dinner, too exhausted to be any fun.
On Saturday we went to the new house again and worked our asses off despite the moist heat. Inside it was really cool, which is a good thing, and we kept the doors and windows closed to keep the heat outside. Still, there's something quite exhausting about painting a ceiling.
Halfway through I remembered that taking a picture before everything was some measure of white was probably a good idea.
Yes, it was as brown as a cardboard box. NoKey had already given the wood we'd glued over the cracks two good layers, so that was a start at least. Now for the rest.
Here's the full summary.
First layer of latex on the ceiling in the main bedroom. Finished the other half of the attic. NoKey did some sanding on the ceiling in the livingroom but is going off full-rhino-rampant-rage into wanting to sand the entire ceiling and doing another layer in the attic.
We visted Intratuin for an apple tree and came home with a lovely Jonagold tree that will do well against our eastern garden wall (once I shrink the hydrangea some more it should have ample room). I plan to put the buddleja on the other side of the hydrangea (which really needs more cutting down and seriously, once all those big scary spiders just sod off I can get around to it). We also bought a raspberry, more of the pearlwort (Sagina subulata), a thyme and a sage plant. NoKey had to ride in the back seat so the apple tree would have more room.
Yesterday (Sunday) was one of those hard-to-get-going days. I had suggested NoKey take his velomobile to Tilburg, since the first bedroom was done and he could, technically, sleep over there. A tire still needed fixing and then there were other tires to be pumped. I tried fixing my lights, succeeding in the back (simple battery change, dark days are coming again) and failing in the front. We dragged most of the already-packed boxes downstairs and packed up Iota.
Finally NoKey went to catch the Waterbus, but then he returned because there was something wrong. He fixed it, and went to the Waterbus successfully.
I packed some stuff to make soup with, clean clothes and work clothes, and went to Tilburg by car. I can report that one (1) Aygo can successfully hold and transport no less than eight (8) moving boxes as well as four (4) slightly smaller boxes of books.
Also, the passenger seat was still empty and there was a bit of room left at the top, so it's safe to say I could have crammed more into the car if we had packed more.
The A59 was still closed so I took the A58 south of Breda towards Tilburg and, in a stroke of genius, took an exit earlier than I should have, parking near an info sign to steal some roadside native plants.
(I can just see myself cycling all over Tilburg and surroundings, toting a tiny spade and trowel and cackling madly, stealing native plants from roadsides.)
I managed to snatch the coveted Tansy (Boerenwormkruid, Tanacetum vulgare) which can be used to dye things and is also a bee's favorite and picked up yarrow along the way (Duizendblad, Achillea millefolium) which can be used to make tea unless you're allergic to it. Now that I read up on its uses on Wikipedia, it can be used for pretty much anything from colds, bleeds, cuts, bruises, inflammation, the flu, in a salad and against erosion. Huh.
Since these two were not very happy being ripped from the soil, I planted them right away despite the rain and proceeded to give the bedroom ceiling a second layer of latex. I also did some small lines in the second bedroom that we missed, right where the wall meets the ceiling.
By seven, NoKey arrived with bike and we proved that yes, it does fit through the gate, the small alley and into the shed. Hurrah!
We ate soup and fries and then continued home. Sadly, no thunderstorm to entertain us on the road.
Next week will be odd, I'm not pretty sure when we'll actually get around to packing stuff into boxes (which we really need to start doing, as long as we still have a car!). I've also decided that while working on the house on Fridays can be a good thing, it might be wise to reserve Fridays for chores, groceries and packing. This leaves Saturday and Sunday for painting and home improvement. I'm also going to schedule everything around my dad's treatments as he might need the support or at least the distraction to keep him busy.
Next week will see us do another layer of latex in the bedroom, sand the livingroom ceiling, and whatnot.
