Last night we went to the house again for some more painting. It's going slow, but at least by getting there every so many days we might make some progress. Also: if so many jobs can only be done after one another in stead of in parallel, you're pretty much stuck waiting for paint to dry and it's a good thing if you've already done the first base coat a few days back.
(Paint ceiling. Wait until dry. Stick tape on ceiling. Paint wall. Can't be done in parallel -- can't stick tape on a wet ceiling!)
Rob busied himself with the kitchen cupboard lights Luc had picked up, NoKey did a third layer of paint on the 2nd bedroom ceiling -- so that should be done now! -- and Wendy and I busied ourselves with the heating pipes in the living room. Where I'd sparingly used the white paint, Wendy had oodles of experience and slapped it on really well. And it stuck. And looked double more awesome.
At the end of the evening we loaded the trash bags of greenery my mom ripped out of the garden into the car and disposed of it in the underground trash containers back in Rotterdam. I'm just glad the police van trailing us for a bit decided not to pull me over. "Honest, officer, it's not cannabis at all. See, it's nightshade, that's just a poisenous plant, nothing illegal about it."
(And in a few weeks, the mutated drosophilae offspring that found a new home in my car will take over the world. It's amazing how many generations they can cram into a week!)
We're going to need some advice on how to proceed with the main bedroom ceiling now that the whitewash and part of the top layer of hardboard is gone. Does it need a base white paint? Do we fill up the cracks with Alabastine or do we glue strips over them? A visit to Karwei should help, which we plan to do on Thursday. I will check out the garden pavement department (more stepstones!) too; if I'm skipping an Eclipse meeting over this, I might as well make it count.
By the time we've got the advice from Karwei, we can proceed with the ceiling in the main bedroom. We can also proceed on the walls in the second bedroom now that the ceiling is done, which will nearly wrap up that room!
The attic bedroom is pretty much ready for its first forays into paint, but I haven't decided on how & what yet. I'm weighing my options -- if we sand the beams, they can be painted while the rest is latexed. It'll make for a nicer finish. Everything has to be painted anyway (it looks like toddlers on crack have used pencils on the beams). But if we want to do it the quick & dirty way, we can just slap latex on everything for the smooth white finish. There's only one large enough straight wall that needs wall paint. The only other straight wall has a door, some tiles around the sink and a crazy altar-cupboard-dumbwaiteresque nook. All the other walls are angled so can be treated like they're a ceiling.
We might also get started on the living room ceiling, but Wendy said she knew a guy who could do it really well. I am definitely interested in not having to do it ourselves!
It's pretty difficult for me to manage the whole list of klussen, because I can tell people what to do but not how to do it. But at least the list helps me keep a bird's eye view of what needs to be done. And what can't be done because stuff needs time to dry.
Thursday will be a weird klusavond (evening for klussen) so I won't invite anyone to come over and help because we'll be at Karwei for a good while and the evenings are short anyway. However, the rest of the planning is as follows:
Friday -- I spend the day sewing until I go to Hilversum for a barbecue
Saturday -- I drop off Caelin's bridesmaids dress and drive to Tilburg. Depending on when I'm finished sewing...I can't say exactly at what time I'll be there, so give me a call on Saturday when you plan on coming. NoKey can't join us because of a bachelor party.
I'll spend the night with Wendy & Rob in Kaatsheuvel, which will save me two hours in the car, and continue klussen on Sunday.
Anyone willing to lend a hand either day is very welcome to do so. As I said, I don't know exactly when I'll be going to Tilburg on Saturday so give me a call on my cellphone (-46 337 837) to check. On Sunday I'll be there pretty much most of the day (10ish and onward).

*) Klussen (v); from: klus (n) [klʏs] ; this is a Dutch word you should just learn since I'll be using it quite a lot. It is a verb that can mean: home improvement, working on the house, painting, putting wall-paper on the walls, inserting a new kitchen or bathroom, laying/tiling a floor, drilling holes, filling holes, painting walls or ceilings, re-building, and generally changing things about the house. It is also a common source of injuries. It is always DIY and can never be done by a professional (because then it wouldn't be "klussen" anymore) unless you hire a "klusjesman" (man who does the "klussen" for you).
Jargon: Klussûh.

Date: 2011-08-24 10:11 am (UTC)A second (and maybe third depending on the thickness of the layer) coat should give a nice finish.
Filling the seams with albastine is one option, but that will always remain visible. You can glue strips of wood over them instead, using a contrasting colour or latexing them as well.
For an even more contrasting look, you can make a framework of beams, so it looks like the ceiling beams stick through it. (my dad did that in his bedroom, I can make a picture when I get back home and mail it if you like)
just my 2 cents
Also, I have a family day on saturday, but my schedule for sunday is empty.
