Every live roleplayer starts out his costume wardrobe with a cloak. It's the easiest to make, single most characteristic piece of clothing that defines a costume, mostly because nobody wears them anymore these days. Dramatic as dracula, down-to-earth like an elf, or multi-purpose because you can't store several of these bulky things in your small student apartment, they come in all shapes and sizes.
My first cloak is now some seven years old, and I made it from three meters of green wool in a half-circle pattern. It's seen my first real character through, and still functions quite well as a back- or a bed-warmer. Yes, it doubles as a blanket if need be.
It's warmed Anna, Xantara, Sasara, Lanelle, Frankie, and Beriadanwen.
Last Legendfalls I loaned JW my cloak. It was already coming apart at the neckline buttonholes: the two buttonholes I'd made to stick a fibula through were slowly tearing the cloth apart. After the event, JW returned it to me, nearly crying, because the cloak had flapped around a tree as he was running and one of the buttonholes tore itself out. I told him not to worry about it, gave him a hug and set out to repairing it.
I didn't have any wool in the exact shade, but for repairs that's not really necessary. I basted the tear shut with green thread, put an extra layer of wool underneath the tear and then zig-zagged over the tear until it was done.
Then I cut out two leaves in a slightly olive green, an appliqued them over the repairs. It will keep the fabric stronger, and it covers most of the repairs nicely.
I tied off all threads in the back, but my spool loops sometimes so it's not perfect. The right side is neat though!

I'm curious how long this cloak will last me now it's back in shape!

*grin*
