Hope to Haiti Challenge!
Mar. 29th, 2011 02:28 pmYou might have read this on
corsetmakers or
dressdiaries, but I'm crossposting it now.
Cathy Hay, known as
harmanhay on Livejournal is the founder of Your Wardrobe Unlock'd and Foundations Revealed, two subriber e-zines posting in-depth articles about construction and history of undergarments and ballgowns, costumes, etc. She's a businesswoman and a driven historian who used to be a math teacher. She devotes a lot of time to historic research and has organised a trip to the Bath museum to get some hands-on experience with historic corsets as well.
Several years ago she started on an insane project, the Oak Leaf Dress. She wanted to make a reproduction of a Charles Worth ballgown that was made for Lady Curzon. Her perseverance paid off -- and such perseverance! She spent six months handsewing the oak leaves onto the silk. Quite an achievement!
Now she's embarking on another amazing project, which is even more insane and she's doing it to raise money for Haiti. The news crews have gone home but Haiti still needs our help. The communities are still struggling to rebuild and one way we can help is to donate to this cause. The first 40 people who raise five thousand dollars get to go to Haiti to help build a community center.
Cathy has a rather unique approach to raising funds. She is going to make an even more insane dress (full-size image), which will be quite a challenge in itself. And she will document her efforts, taking pictures and reporting on her progress to those people who have donated to the Hope to Haiti cause. Only those people who have donated, will gain access to this special filter.
What it boils down to is: Cathy gets a dress, we get to learn from her work, and Haiti gets a community center!
And it gets better.
There will be milestones. The first milestone was $500.-
Cathy has promised to go to the Costume College 2012 Gala Ball dressed only in what we "pay her" to make. Until she had raised $ 500.- for Haiti she will attend the ball naked. The next milestone would get her into combinations, a kind of undergarment. For $ 1000.- she would also make a petticoat. Etc.
Currently, she's raised nearly enough money to make a fully embroidered corset and there's still miles and miles to go to raise enough to get the entire dress, but she's getting there.
In total, she's hoping to raise $ 14,000.- so her partner Demi and she can go to Miami, where they will join the Hope to Haiti group. So that's $ 10000,- for the cause and $ 4000,- to get her there to help build it. For $14,000.- she will let you see her make an amazing gown, and all the proper undergarments, embroidery, beading and accessoiries. If there's one person who can pull off an amazing reproduction of historic haute couture gowns, it's her!
So let's give her a hand and send some hope to Haiti!
Original post outlining the cause here. The video in this post explains it better than I can! There's a donate button too, and she will take paypal as well as creditcards.
These are, so far, all the progress updates on the fundraising effort. By now, she has raised enough money for the corset and the embroidery, as well as the combinations and the first petticoat. That means you get to see an expert create and intricately embroider a historical corset, if you donate.
And before you ask, yes I have donated so I will get to see all the details of construction!
Please note that you can only be placed on the filter if you have a Livejournal account, but setting one up is free!
