Creative Photo Challenge 1: Games
Dec. 15th, 2010 09:07 amAfter my post last week about wanting to practice my Photography, things started snowballing into a group, a theme and a challenge.
The first Challenge was "Games" (as stated by Ork) and because I wanted to think creatively, I installed Labyrinth to make a mind map.
This is the result.

I combined the theme with plans to go to the Archeon (top right - near Hide-and-Seek) as well as things that were available to me: games we owned (Burn in Hell, Ingenious) and NoKey's ancient Atari game computer that also never made the cut. It was an interesting exercise to see "Games" and its associations and how some things clicked with photography terms. (perspective, colours, macro)
None of the pictures from the elaborate studio set-up made the cut. I combined the money from some ancient insurance game with the pawns from a chess game, a D&D d20 die, and the horrible yellowish incandescent/fluorescent light mix from the atelier into a make-shift "Mensergerjeniet" game. I even tried to tell a story with chess pieces. But none of these pictures made the cut because I'm horribly perfectionist in judging my own pictures. They just didn't speak to me.

And then I discovered Angry Birds. At first I wanted a semi-anonymous picture of NoKey playing the game, but then I realised I could either get NoKey in focus and in good light, or the screen. It was difficult to get the screen sharp, and it gave off interesting light, and ...it was a challenge! Woohoo!

My one idea from the mindmap I got to execute didn't disappoint either. I met a lovely young mother and her son on the swings, and explained about the challenge, asking her if I could take a picture of her boy on the swings. This picture, and the smile on the boy's face, just make it golden. Even though the composition is a bit off, the exposure had to be corrected and it's not as artsy as I'd hoped it would be, it's still a lovely picture.
I also got a lot of comments on the Group, since it's part of the Group policy to comment on other people's photos, but I would love to hear what you think.
