Mayor's costume - - continued
Sep. 28th, 2010 10:55 pmDespite my initial spurt to get this costume ready for a fitting, Life Happened (as I love to put it) and I lost my momentum. Work, courses and moving some stuff about in the house. You know how it goes.
Lucky for me and for Jeroen, I took a week off before the Event Where He Has To Wear It. This also has to do with me having three larps in a row. So this week I got cracking on the coat.
I left off here:

The coat was in a wearable state, but before Jeroen got to fit it I even managed to set the sleeves in. It was a Sunday morning somewhere in August, I believe, when he tried it on. And with some result!

Jeroen is quite tall, but I was glad to see I had some extra space in the sleeves. The hem is fine too, he didn't want the coat to be overly long, so the hem can be above the ankle. There was a little snag with the sleeve though: the armscye was a bit uncomfortable. We agreed I'd fix it and add shoulder pads to the coat, and he left again.
...and then Life Happened and I left the project for a while until this week.
I'd actually intended to fix this coat first, and finish another project later, but as it turned out I only got to work on it today. In the end, all will be well. This is what I did today.
After fixing the armscye (sorry, no pictures of that), I pinned, piled and sewed the lining pieces together.

Okay, I agree that's just a mass of blue poly-taffeta and a coupl'a pins. Still, I worked hard on this picture. The pinning especially was a lot of work. Never you mind the ironing.
If I hate a fabric, it's poly-blend fake taffeta. The fluff will strangle your cats and it's impossible to have a seam pressed open. In the end I managed well enough.

I added a tag of my former business to the back yoke of the lining. Though we've quit the business, people still remember the name and associate it with me, so I keep using the tags. I might even add value to the finished piece, I don't know. It's just a thing I do, which makes it all look just a bit better than without.
After a long day of sewing, here's where I was at:

Interior & Exterior all assembled! The lining has brown facings, two inner pockets with brown piping, and a brown mandarin collar. The exterior has no pockets (as per request).
Tomorrow, I'll get down to bag-lining, top stitching and buttonholes. After that, it's just a matter of adding the fake mayor's chain links by hand, and I'm ready to tackle the next project. Stay Tuned!
