Superformiweldigeindefantakolosachtig!
Aug. 20th, 2010 10:05 amMary Poppins was awesome. So sweet that it melted my teef, but that's fine. There was just one downside for me..."supercalifragilisticexpialidasties"
...expialidasties?
...expialidasties?
When I was just a kid and I listened to Mary Poppins, it was always "superformiweldigeindefantakolosachtig"!
No califragilistic. No expiali, and definitely no dasties!
And now I just found a third version on YouTube.
Still, the cast, crew, music, and decor were all marvellous! The props and décor were great. The house on cherry tree lane could open up, and close up, and turn to the back to display the rear of the house and open up into the kitchen, with shelves breaking and plates rolling off into the sink (and then when Mary works her magic, everything would go back to normal!). There was a childen's bedroom with a self-folding bed and that could change into a balcony and roof for the chimney sweep's song. The chimney had a little elevator for Mary in it and it could blow smoke!
Awesome!
The costumes blew me away too. Especially in the park scene where Bert is painting a summer landscape and the kids say "it looks nothing like the real thing!" and Mary works her magic again and all those drab Victorian gowns are suddenly in purple spirals and stripes, green blotches on white fabric and with colourful hats as well. I think the purple Victorian was my favorite, they used a purple-and-white zig-zag fabric for the pleated hem of the underskirt, and a different pattern for the bustle and yet another for the rest of the skirt. They really took the construction of the dress into account with the different fabrics. (I'm surch a dork!)
I loved how they got Queen Victoria in it too (though her costume was a bit off-period) and how Mary wore pink.
What really surprised me, was in one of the first scenes when the kids started singing. The girl just opened her mouth and blew me away. I'm not a fan of kids, but this girl can sing!
Of course everyone loves the chimney sweep, but the other characters were really well-developed too. I loved the housekeeper and her funky Amsterdam accent. The operatic nanny Andrews. And the statues!
So, just to get this song wegded in your head, here's the Broadway version of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious on YouTube.
