My mother in law turned 64 this week and to celebrate we would have dinner. But, since my mother in law and my sister in law have just gotten two lovely kittens, we went over to Barendrecht to sample.

Of course I realise the rest of my blog post will pass most people by in a pink fluffy haze...

Kookla, the black kitten, was obviously more adventurous than Jasper, on the right. Kookla would pounce far sooner than Jasper, but once stirred even Jasper attacked my hand with vigour. I've been nibbled and chewed by kittens, hurrah!

After a thorough kitten-session and a cup of tea, we went over to the south part of Rotterdam by tram and went to Roos Marijn, a mediterranean restaurant with a homely atmosphere. We were greeted by a very friendly young-at-heart man, who seated us near the bar in the living-room like restaurant. The food, service, humour and warmth was just exquisite.

There was enough to choose from and for people who enjoy Mediterranean food it was hard to choose. Mushrooms with garlic, Feta with herbs and tomatoes, perhaps the tapas menu, or should we go for a salad with blue cheese?
In the end we all settled on some lovely food and a bottle of exquisite white wine. Where Kitty and Tessa had the 500g plaice (Dutch: schol), NoKey chose a vegetarian tapas menu and I had the salmon on a bed of steamed leeks. It was damned tasty! The only thing that could be said against the food was that maybe the fries were a bit too salty.

I was amazed to find, at the end of dinner, most plates completely empty. We'd ordered large dinners, with a few side orders (an extra salad as well as the mushrooms in garlic) and everything except for the standard salad was completely devoured. It tasted so well!
The waiter, a charming chap who always sat on his haunches to talk with us, so we didn't have to look up at him, asked if it had been sufficient. We were near to bursting.

Dessert featured greek yoghurt and a combination of smaller deserts for Tessa.

If you're more of the sleek, modern restaurants, you shouldn't go to Roos Marijn. But if you enjoy the homely, warm people of Greece, France, Spain or Portugal, you really will feel quite at home here.
