Gardening update!
Jun. 13th, 2010 09:15 pmWhen I open the doors to the balcony, I get happy. For this is what I see:

From left to right: Four chestnuts (partially hidden by the door), five tomato plants, a paprika sapling, garlic, wineberry, and behind the right door are my lavender and two oaks. Hanging from the railing are basil, chives and parsley.

The chestnuts went ouside at the start of May and immediately acted as if it was autumn. The cold nights made them lose several leaves, but as the weather warmed up new leaves sprouted. They must be really confused now. Still alive and kicking though!

The herbs. Basil is staying behind a bit, maybe it's too cold. The parsley sure loved the rain, and the chives are coming along well.

My paprika sapling. Contrary to last year, this one hasn't been nibbled by the Lisa. If we get a hot summer, it'll do fine even in our breezy Holland.

The proto-oak, or oak sapling. The white part of the sapling has developed bark and from it sprouted a single branch bearing several leaves. Behind it is the pot of NoKey's oak, which is large enough to no longer fit into a single photo. Or maybe I can't step back far enough as our balcony is rather tiny.

My pride and joy: Rubus Phoenicolasius, or Wineberry. I repotted it earlier this year and it's paying off. It's larger than ever, it's sprouting branches bearing leaves and flowers left and right, and the vine for next year's fruit is already nearly as large as this year's vine. I'll finally have more than four measly wineberries this year. Or so I hope. It certainly looks promising!
If all goes well we'll be having some fruits, herbs and vegetables from our own balcony garden this year... Hoping for a sunny summer!
