With all muscleaches subsiding, I figured it was now or never and I took the recumbent out. I still had a usb-stick to deliver to Nieuwerkerk. It was only five or six kilometers to BigBoss' place, and when I had frummaged the envelope through their letterbox, I got back on the bike.
I wasn't done cycling by far!
Continuing towards Gouda I soon found a sign for cyclists, which told me Moordrecht was only four kilometers away. As we've been looking to buy a house there, I figured I'd meander on down to Moordrecht and have a look-see. I ended up here:

It's odd to think that for years I've lived on the other side of this water, and yet I've never cycled here. The bike path next to the dike is some four meters lower than where the cars go. It's ideal: you catch less of the wind, and you're not troubled by cars overtaking you every time. Add to that the fact that the landscape is gorgeous and not at all like I know it to be on the other side of the river!
After five or ten minutes, I found this:

A sign next to it said:
(I haven't a clue how to translate all this in English, so try your luck in Babelfish if you want)
The water level in there is 1 meter below sea level, but from where I stood I couldn't see if it is higher or lower than in that canal. For the record: this point is very close to the lowest point of the Netherlands, in aforementioned Zuidplaspolder. The lowest point is 6.76 meters under sea level.
We're lucky to be living on the fourth floor, should the dikes ever break...
I continued on to Moordrecht and wouldn't you know it, the only picture I took of the church tower is corrupted thanks to, I think, Gwenview. I guess that means I'll have to go back there. Moordrecht is really quite a beautiful village, with unexpected twists in the road. I like it!
I took some road or other (no map, just an idea of the general direction to take to get back home, with the wind in my back) and I ended up here:

Which is not so special in itself. But I was also standing here:

That looks like an intriguing place to cycle!
I didn't go down this path, instead I took a left turn down the Oude Spoorbaan, and set my feet to take me home. The wind blew me on, with a steady pace of 25 kph. I took the express cycle path by Nieuwerkerk and got home in time to make dinner and before the rain started.
According to my cycling computer I did 24 kilometers in 1 hour 17 minutes. Not bad!
