In the confines of a white tent, at the edge of the forest, Beriadanwen tosses and turns between the furs of her bed. She dreams...

...Beriadanwen looked to the forest, its edge so close. In the undergrowth, embraced by Rystill's plants all around him, stood the Waywatcher. His cloak was perfectly still, blending into the background. From beneath his hood his blue eyes pierced her soul.
"Guren niniatha nan lû i ammin achenitham" she whispered.
She turned around. His was a different path, through the mists. Hers would lead through shadow.

The scenery changed around her, the forest became a sickly ghost of Weylin Woods. In front of her stood a vampire, who stretched forth his arms. She ducked, rolled and sprang to her feet. She fought the vampire, all that he stood for, but it became larger and larger until she could no longer fight it.

Suddenly the dream changed again, to a brilliantly lit hall, entwined by trees. On the dais before her was the Queen, who stood in judgement. Beriadanwen sank to one knee. The Queen shook her head, cast down the sword Beriadanwen had offered her.
To Beriadanwen's right side, Dur'Ithil appeared. "It is time." he said. He raised a hand, fingers dripping with red paint. One smear obscured the tattoo on her left cheek, another those on her right cheek. He painted over all her tattoos, replaced those shapes with fresh warpaint, dripping like blood on the tiles of the throneroom. He painted her bare arms and even her bare legs, the soles of her feet. Then he stood before her and whispered a name she did not recognise...

...Beriadanwen sits up in bed, sweating. With a sigh, she casts off the remaining furs, and dresses. Outside, she tells Sumolan to go to sleep, and takes over the watch, staring into the dark forest.
