Standing ready to meet the end
Dec. 31st, 2009 02:06 pmI have always refused to do the nigh-obligatory "looking back on this year"-post at the very end, but that doesn't mean I don't evaluate. If there's something I've learned this year it's that evaluating your work, even after only one task, is very important. It can keep me sane.
Another thing that I've learned this year and that is a very important step too, is that there is nothing you can't do if you set your mind to it. If I look at my talents, from sewing to corsetmaking to learning Sindarin to playing the harp, I find I've very little difficulty adjusting to a new challenge. I'm not saying I can build a perfect corset, or even that I have a designer's eye. I just find that when I apply myself, I can make something that I like, or that someone else likes. (And a harp is just a very forgiving instrument.)
That's a good feeling to have as we stand on the brink of a new year.
Even though last night's party at Keffie's place for Leona's birthday was a bit sad. Goofy/Grimm was there, and he's not spoken a word or even looked at us if he could help it. Again I am saddened by his stubborn way, how he can't set aside our past differences. It's miraculous how much fun a birthday can still be even if the room is, magical-energy wise, divided into two parts. I still had a great time, and I hope that he did too.
My brother went into the hospital this morning for his appendix. They're going to remove it this afternoon, and though my father seems rather worried (Jos is 30, going on 25 and healthy as a horse), all I can remember from my own appendicitis was that coughing was not fun after the surgery. It's been 13 years or so, but still. He sure picked a great time, is all I'm saying.
On to the festivities: We will be celebrating the New Year in Kessel, as planned. I baked two pies to take along as snacks: Boterkoek en Speculaastaart. Both are very yummy, and especially the latter looks amazing! I can't wait to sample them, but I will. I'll also bring the champagne I got from the Newyear's brunch last year.
I feel I should have more oliebollen before midnight. And there hasn't been one quiet moment all day, because the people around our apartment building are already lighting fireworks like madmen.
Outside snow has been falling softly but it's thawed as soon as it hits the ground. I hope we can get back home tomorrow ;-)
Have a safe night, and I'll see you on the flipside!
