First day of cycling to work on my new bicycle. I was again overawed by the sights. I love that bit down the Rotte. Even though it's the same route every time, it changes every day. The Dutch painters from the 17th and 18th centuries already discovered this, but allow me to repeat what they said on canvas: Dutch skies are so very, very beautiful.

When I leave work it's getting dark already, and by the time I get to the Rotte the land is dyed in a shadowy husk. The clouds are dark grey shapes looming over the black stalks of trees, while the sky they all are superimposed on is a riot of sunset colours. Slowly, very slowly, the moon lifts over the land, shrinking as it leaves the horizon's proximity and its light growing more clear. In the shadows beneath the trees I see small white triangles flick when the bunnies having their evening silflay hop towards safety as I whizz past on my bike.

I was passed by a flock of geese this morning, honking loudly. They were flying very low, circling over the field and then turning behind me to pass me by, a mere few meters higher than I was. I thought they would be going towards their holiday destinations, wintering in the south, but when I returned from work they were still in the field. Perhaps it was a dry test run. It certainly wasn't a silent test run. But it was awesome.

A Canadian I knew said that the only things truly wild in the Netherlands are the sky and the insides of some people.

I totally agree with you.

Sometimes, in this time of year.
When the sun is just right in the sky. It can be so beautifull.
