Last night I felt a bit incompetent. I was tired, it had been a long night, and I had just re-installed two laptops with an open source operating system (an OSOS, in fact). There's no reason for me to feel incompetent.

I'm a tester Jim, not a developer!

So as such, I have done well. I updated my laptop so it was actual (97 enhancement updates, a large number of security updates and some bugfixes), before I upgraded to Kubuntu 9.10. It already ran Kubuntu, so this was easy.
As for the Sogeti laptop, I installed Ubuntu, since the Kubuntu iso was 770 mb and didn't fit onto a cd. That was issue #1. I kept track:

  1. .iso is 770mb, too large for cdrom.
  2. Update KUbuntu through Adept "exited with code 1". Reason unknown; retried and works fine now.
  3. Not enough free disk space. "Sudo apt-get clean" (as suggested by updater) solved!
  4. After installing the new distro, when I boot World of Goo for the second time in a row my screen quits working. A reboot seems to have fixed this problem.
  5. During start-up it says "one or more of the mounts in /etc/fstab can not be mounted". System boots fine, and so far everything seems to be working.
  6. Akonadi server won't start up on start-up and gives an error message -- why is it trying to start up in the first place? Do I need it?

Now the funny thing is that all of these have come from KUbuntu, my very own laptop. Ha! Ubuntu on the Sogeti laptop hasn't yet been buggy, although downloading packages through Adept had some problems because the connection with the internet is wonky. This could be because of the network cable not clicking into the socket, being broken, or perhaps something about the network card. If it's internal, I sure can't fix it.

Heroes V is worse on my laptop (9.10) than it was on my desktop (9.04). After the splash screen, I get nothing, even afer tweaking Wine. Wesnoth runs fine, but won't quit without "killall -9 wesnoth", which is a Very Bad Sign.
So you can imagine that around midnight, this depressed me.
World of Goo works fine though!

The plan right now is to wait until Sunday, and see whether WOW works on the Sogeti laptop under wine. If it does, I might just downgrade my personal laptop to Hardy or Jaunty so I can actually play Heroes after the presentation is done. Keffie gifted me those dvds, so I might as well use them. I really don't need the latest version of everything on all my pc's. If it means I go through this ordeal every six months, I sure don't!

Heroes V is buggy..period ! ^^ the resources it uses are higher then for example Oblivion, which is completely nuts. The games wasn't even playable when it was released, so I'm not suprised you have problems with it.

Insufficient nerdiness? Its more nerd then I have!
Good luck, and if in doubt or frustrated, you can always try my technique of hitting it untill it works.

You're more nerdy than I am, and I ám a developer. Officially that is. Don't do much developing atm.
