Mystery Fabric
Jan. 17th, 2009 10:32 pmLast week we visited the market on Tuesday and I hauled a few fabrics home, including a mystery fabric in a lovely grey-blue shade. It looked like a wool, but it definitely felt like polyester. I couldn't be bothered to do a burn-test (where's that trusty girlfriend with the matches when you need one, eh?) so I called it mystery fabric #1 and left it at that.
I wanted to make pants out of it. I also had some ice-camo for a vest. The camo fabric was a coupon, a little left-over piece I once picked up at Schröder and it needed to be pre-washed and pre-shrunk. To turn the washing machine on for just one meter of fabric, that would be a waste! So I took the mystery fabric (blue, just like that camo) and one of my blue blouses to join in the tumble.
A couple of hours later, I took the laundry out of the machine. At first I didn't recognize the article I had in my hand. Little did I realise it was my bright turquoise blouse. Not so bright anymore, and definitely nowhere near turquoise. It was now a undefined colour between indigo and black.
So I guess mystery fabric #1 was mostly wool because I've never seen polyester lose its colour!
The ice blue camo is now not so ice anymore, though the camo persists. It's a little...muted. Deep grey. Like night-time camo. And it still goes well with the not-so-mystery fabric, so I guess this was an interesting experiment. And a lesson to go play with matches before randomly tossing fabrics into a washing machine.
Huh.
