Medieval dreams
Dec. 23rd, 2008 09:19 amEver since I dreamed of not just one, but both my cousins in costume, I can't shake the feeling I need new medieval garb. Good-medieval-garb-that-doesn't-get-in-the-way-garb. My linen dress is fine, and has nice sleeves, but they're not very practical.
So in this one dream (I had it a week or two ago, and I can still remember most of it since I was so aghast that they were both in costume!) my cousin Gea was wearing some navy blue monstrosity she made herself, where the shoulders were far too wide (probably because it was a Simplicity pattern she used) and she had tied the sleeves in the right place with string. It looked poofy. Well enough for a first dress, though nothing historical.
My other cousin Linda was wearing a fabulous, period-correct medieval ensemble. Blue underdress, brown wool overdress hitched up over her belt a bit, red hood lined with yellow. It was gorgeous. It looked great on her.
I want one.
How does thin brown wool for the overdress, and blue linen for the underdress, with blue-and-light-blue hood with liripipe sound? It would match NoKey's Welsh Archer costume....somewhat. I like the brown wool, though I haven't got any, and I'd like to combine it with either blue or red. Come to think of it, I've got some burgundy wool that will do fine for a hood with liripipe. Just need a matching red linnen (or rosewood, instead of burgundy, that will work just as well) for the underdress and lining.
The atelier is nearly tidied enough for some sewing, and I daresay I would have, had I not been so cold last night. Repairing Nieske's tunic is a small enough task, all I need is a small square of linen that will fit under the tear and I can try out that one stitch on my machine especially for that purpose.
I also thought of a lovely hood for Marianne. A small enough task for tonight?

Date: 2008-12-24 04:26 pm (UTC)Burgundy is my colour too, and I have some wool lying around that's got some holes at the selvedge, so it would work really well for this dress. I could still make a blue underdress? Or a mustard/camel coloured one. Or just go crazy and do yellow, so I'll match Johannes de Nar and Polomeus :-)

Date: 2008-12-24 10:08 pm (UTC)It's just that most of the red you see is more...red. As in tomato-y, orangy red. Eyesearing red. Or lighter pinkish-red. Might be better for a later project like a nice sleeveless or short-sleeved surcoat, really. I like the darker shades of pink and the tomato red, but am not convinced about the burgundy. If you do end up going for it, you might as well go jingle all the way:) : http://cadieux.mediumaevum.com/applegreen.html middle of the compilation pic
I use Marie-Chantal's site a lot because it's a convenient collection of pictures, maybe it would help you to go through them? I find that using actual pictures helps me decide what I like or not. It got me the Carrot/Greensleeves kirtle, in any case. Not sure if that's good or bad...

I don't have time to make any of this right now, but if I make this, it'll be either the side-lacing one or the front-lacing one. With straight sleeves.
