Ever since I dreamed of not just one, but both my cousins in costume, I can't shake the feeling I need new medieval garb. Good-medieval-garb-that-doesn't-get-in-the-way-garb. My linen dress is fine, and has nice sleeves, but they're not very practical.

So in this one dream (I had it a week or two ago, and I can still remember most of it since I was so aghast that they were both in costume!) my cousin Gea was wearing some navy blue monstrosity she made herself, where the shoulders were far too wide (probably because it was a Simplicity pattern she used) and she had tied the sleeves in the right place with string. It looked poofy. Well enough for a first dress, though nothing historical.
My other cousin Linda was wearing a fabulous, period-correct medieval ensemble. Blue underdress, brown wool overdress hitched up over her belt a bit, red hood lined with yellow. It was gorgeous. It looked great on her.
I want one.
How does thin brown wool for the overdress, and blue linen for the underdress, with blue-and-light-blue hood with liripipe sound? It would match NoKey's Welsh Archer costume....somewhat. I like the brown wool, though I haven't got any, and I'd like to combine it with either blue or red. Come to think of it, I've got some burgundy wool that will do fine for a hood with liripipe. Just need a matching red linnen (or rosewood, instead of burgundy, that will work just as well) for the underdress and lining.

The atelier is nearly tidied enough for some sewing, and I daresay I would have, had I not been so cold last night. Repairing Nieske's tunic is a small enough task, all I need is a small square of linen that will fit under the tear and I can try out that one stitch on my machine especially for that purpose.
I also thought of a lovely hood for Marianne. A small enough task for tonight?

I don't know, I know you like brown but I've fallen out of love with it. Plus it's not as common as you'd think. And parti-colored hoods on women are pretty rare. Not impossible, just rare.

What about pink? Green? Brown is boooring...;)

But I like brown and red together!
I have loads of green and pink already. Granted, more green than pink, but pink needs less of it to reach critical mass. I'd go for blue and red?

I think Ill probably make the main dress out of burgundy red and fill out the rest with either yellow or blue. Colourful enough for you?

Hey, no need to get the snark out:P

Personally, I'd like a blue main dress unit but with red/yellow accessories like in your dream. The blue dress you gave me did look cool on you. Or rust instead of brown? Orange is nice too.

And underdyeing with rosewood gives a very nice rose, which isn't pink-pink but still pink.

Sorry, didn't mean to come off as snarky. I tend to make either too flashy or too drab colour combinations, so your help is much appreciated.

Burgundy is my colour too, and I have some wool lying around that's got some holes at the selvedge, so it would work really well for this dress. I could still make a blue underdress? Or a mustard/camel coloured one. Or just go crazy and do yellow, so I'll match Johannes de Nar and Polomeus :-)

Ok, I wasn't sure for a moment there. The Internet is a bit low on context.

It's just that most of the red you see is more...red. As in tomato-y, orangy red. Eyesearing red. Or lighter pinkish-red. Might be better for a later project like a nice sleeveless or short-sleeved surcoat, really. I like the darker shades of pink and the tomato red, but am not convinced about the burgundy. If you do end up going for it, you might as well go jingle all the way:) : http://cadieux.mediumaevum.com/applegreen.html middle of the compilation pic

I use Marie-Chantal's site a lot because it's a convenient collection of pictures, maybe it would help you to go through them? I find that using actual pictures helps me decide what I like or not. It got me the Carrot/Greensleeves kirtle, in any case. Not sure if that's good or bad...

I like the green side-lacing kirtle, but I think I'm more tempted to make the one on the top right of this page: http://cadieux.mediumaevum.com/15.html (http://cadieux.mediumaevum.com/15.html)
It's almost the same colour, too.

I don't have time to make any of this right now, but if I make this, it'll be either the side-lacing one or the front-lacing one. With straight sleeves.

On a different note, what kind of sleeve configuration are you planning on which layer? Short? Sleeveless? Long? Pendant? Tight? wide?
