Sep. 7th, 2008 10:23 amAnd so our last day on this island has dawned and when dusk falls the bus will bring us back to the airport in Andimachia. Looking back on this holiday, it is much like that Summoning of a couple of years ago. I expected and planned for little, and got it too.
Mostly I have parked my lazy ass near the pool and read books. Considering the last few weeks at work, this was a good thing. I very much enjoyed our trip to Nisyros (See also “Down into the volcano” earlier this week) and of course I have enjoyed the company of friends we have not seen in two years.
We will miss Stamatis and Lydia, where we have had dinner many times and left a ten euro tip last night before they clasped our hands and we said warm goodbyes.
There were once again, the kittens and cats of Kos. From the tiny grey, dim-eyed kitten that a French tourist carried to the shade where in all likelihood the kitten would die, to Roaches and Rascal, sister and brother who spent their time near Stamatis' Taverna hunting roaches from the sewer and chasing them down the street when they got bored with begging for food. There was the kitten who climbed a potted plant and played with our fingers in Mandraki, and those black and white kittens near Baltic who were making mock attacks at eachother and tumbling over a patch of grass while we laughed until we cried.
We saw friends from two years ago too. Grizo, still very much like my first cat, still enjoying a good pat and scratch. Fluffy and Brother, all grown up now – Brother scratching me badly twice in very nearly the same place. Yowler, all grown up and grown fat and beautiful and apparantly adopted into a loving household. Both Fluffy and Yowler remembered us, coming over for a good petting and then carrying on with their business as all cats do.
I will not miss the apartment, with its cracked tiles, mouldy shower curtain, smelly bathroom, and nightly visitors of roaches, mosquitoes and mice. It reminded us that though this holiday was a lot cheaper than the last one, that money does not go to waste necessarily.
Who knows what next year, next holiday will bring.
