My Sogeti Christmas present was indeed a Digimemo (A5 size). It's quite a nice gadget and more portable than a laptop. It's also cheaper than a laptop and uses loads less batteries: just four AAA batteries in the pad and a teensy tiny watch battery in the pen. The pen does write with real ink and the cartridges are easily replaceable. Two spares can be stored in the pad itself, and there's also room for a Compact Flash card for extra memory. The pad itself has 32 MB's of storage, enough to store many pages.

The digimemo, available also from the Digimemo website.

In the package was also the MyScript handwriting recognition software, allowing me to transcribe my notes not only to .pdf or image (.bmp, .jpg, .tif, or .png), but also to rtf- and txt-files. In a dozen languages! The software is surprisingly good. Observe:

Original image of what I wrote. It transcribed to:

This is a demonstration of my new gadget: a digital memo pad, This was my Christmas present from Sogeti

You simply write on Real paper with a Real pen that comes with the pad, and it Registers every. thing.'
I also got the handwriting-Reay, tritium software with it, Guess what? H is smart enough to decipher 50% of even Pokey's handwriting, which is ghastly.

See? 9 told you W3 didn't I? a
Canyon guys even Read this?)

In an earlier draft, I wrote "nifty gadget" and that was translated to "misty gadget". PoKey's going to go spare though! *grin*

The software 'learns' too, so there's a road ahead of hilarious spelling errors. But I love my new misty gadget!

Oh die is gaaf! Lijkt me enorm handig bij colleges, belangrijke brieven, nieuwe ontwerpen en alles wat je verder nog op wil schrijven.

nifty is right :P I want one.
did I mention your handwriting is strange? I can actually read it, I thought the point of handwriting was to make it look like some kinda secret code only the writer could read.....

So.... now that you've had it a bit -- what do you think?

It looks really cool ~ but I'm sure part of that is simply the "oh! Shiny!" reaction...

Happy New Year

I must be honest and say I haven't used it yet - except to write above note and its predecessors.
The thing is like a downgrade from a laptop: not quite as handy, not quite as expensive, and I'm not quite as willing to tote it around.

There are some major problems with this thing:
1) first and foremost, I run Linux, and the software that's delivered with this thing doesn't run on Linux. Were I to use the pad to write e-mails, I'd have to download the things I wrote in Windoze, then save it, reboot to Linux to send it. Retyping them in Linux would take less time, and less hassle.
2) Any notes I would take on it during meetings at work etc. would require me to download the notes at home. I am not allowed to install the software at my workplace. Again, a lot of hassle.
3) While yes, it is tempting to continue writing on The Siege *) on this thing, handwritten notes take up much more space. My hand would get a cramp pretty soon, and I can't listen to the recordings we made to refresh my memory while I use this pad (in the train for instance) like when I type it all out at my home computer.

*) I'll add you to my flist so you can read what that is all about. Right now, The Siege (working title) pretty much dominates my life. It's the 'book' I write to keep track of what we did in our D&D sessions. I'm 7 months behind on the recordings we made, so I have a lot of catching up to do.

Hmm, would the following be a better investment then (in your opinion)?

http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=24&l2=0&l3=0&l4=0&model=1907&modelmenu=1

It would seem to fit the bill pretty nicely. I'm looking for something smaller than a personal laptop to haul around about town, when fitting a corset client, and on business trips (where I already have my boat-anchor work laptop)...

And a happy New Year to you too!

I am kind of curious though - what made you decide to add me to your friends list? Was it my geekness? My natural charm? My being Dutch?

It was the 'Z' at the end of your username....

Actually, I'd read a number of your comments on corsetmakers and thebatsmeow, and found them interesting enough to follow along...

That, and fond memories of the couple of days I got to spend in Amsterdam a few years back. LOL
