Midwinterfair 2007
Dec. 11th, 2007 11:27 amThe Midwinterfair was fun! I had been very much looking forward to this faire, and I was not disappointed in my expectations.
We drove off at 7 am on Saturday morning, having stuffed one of my cupboards in Ragar's car and brought the dollies down with us. We arrived in good time at a little past 7.20 at the Archeon and proceeded to unload everything. We were exactly in the same spot as last year, and once the cars were unloaded Gwen and NoKey set the tables in the right spot - only slightly hampered by a wall-mounted firehose that needed to remain accessible - while Ragar and I parked the cars.
Setting up was routine, but the new items (such as patterns from Reconstructing History) and the different table settings took some getting used to. I didn't at first like the idea to make one huge table surface from the four tables we had at our disposal. Sometimes you just need the space behind your stand to be yours, so your time-out stuff is safe and there's a barrier between you and that nasty customer. Now we had no personal space, but once everything was set up it created a nice atmosphere.
We dunked the rabbit furs on the left front corner of the table, and I set up the patterns on the right front corner, closest to the door. The clothing was hung up to the wall and people could try it on behind our larger-than-life banner. The benches that came with the stand were set against the wall and all the boxes and stuff was shoved beneath the tables. Huzzah for the 6 x 3 meter tablecloth we use! It has proved very versatile time and again.

We quickly got dressed in our garb because the first visitors had already arrived, even though the Roman Bathhouse we had our stand in was farthest from the entrance. NoKey put on his elven/indian garb (loincloth, chaps, wool tunic, belt) and Ragar put on pieces of his Beastman and Aaron costume, completing the look with a tartar hat with fur. Gwen and I wore almost identical garments, both in blue, brown and orange linen. I had donned my medieval garb including silly headdress, inspired and encouraged by the pictures of the Gettysburg (USA) faire of the weekend previous. Gwen wore a coat over her dress; the coat in brown linen with orange slashes below the waist.
When I was getting some coffee in one of the side rooms that was meant for standholders and volunteers Inge (from Maerquin) clasped my arm. "And I still need to take a picture of you! You look so much like that painting from Vermeer"
I said that I didn't have a jug ready and René pointed to the shelves lining the wall, with (semi-)period jugs. So, long story short, I grabbed a jug, we traipsed to the inn across the street and a series of poses followed.
Now, I know that the timeframe is all wrong, but I think this is about the best compliment I've ever received! Not ever have I been told I look so much like a painting. We managed to recreate the feel of the picture I think.
Another nice touch was the next day, in the same room, while getting coffee again, that a guy from a Braveheart-like show fighting group, said to me "...but you work with the Archeon, right?"
Whoa! Two great compliments in two days! My days were made, all because people appreciate the effort you put into a look to get the smallest details right. I got flirted with by people in historical garb, 50+ and heavily drinking mead. All because of my garb. And because the mood was so good, I didn't mind at all.
I shopped a lot - spending the money I had saved especially for this occasion. At the Polish people's stand I took a look at their knives and selected a short carbon-steel knife (single beveled edge so we can sharpen it easier ourselves) with a wood and horn handle. I also bought a nice bronze (?) Aes Sedai-like ring and a fox fur for Beriadanwen's quiver. Ragar says he will use the paws on the shoulder strap, so it looks like the fox is holding on to my shoulder. Then I dragged NoKey over to the same stand to show him the knives, and he got hold of a folded-steel knife without a sheath. I urged him to buy it, since he would be sorry he hadn't if he didn't, but he complained that € 98,- was a lot of money for a knife. I chipped in 40 euro's and called it a Christmas present, so he ended up buying it anyway. *grin*
We also bought a bottle of old mead for Goofy's birthday (which was celebrated Saturday night), called "Viking Mjod" and supposedly like whisky. I tried the cherry mead which is like Gatorade with alcohol and bought two bottles. I also picked up Henning's Birthday Calender. The previous one is two years old, and this one is nice too. Now we have two of his calender's hanging in our toilet, but they're nice to look at!

I spoke to a lot of live roleplayers and some people I solely know from these fairs. I also had a short chat with one of my exes who works for the Archeon and got a hug. *smile*
It was good seeing you all again

Sundaynight I was feeling quite feverish and Ragar and Gwen proposed to pick up some Chinese and eat at our pad. They helped drag the load back up the stairs (we're on the fourth floor without an elevator) and walked with NoKey to the Chinese while I dropped the car off at Capelsebrug.
I did go to work yesterday, though I felt really tired. I'm sick now, coughing and sniffling, but at least I got to write this and I got my pictures!
