Stamping velvet
Nov. 5th, 2007 11:27 amI read about stamping velvet in an issue of Threads, an online sewing magazine. When Nathreee came over last Saturday I decided to try it, and lo' and behold it worked like a charm!
The trick is to use stamps such as these (silicon rubber stamps) although mine are leaf-shaped, and press the velvet. A step by step:
1) Take a scrap of velvet to protect the pile of the piece you want to stamp. Put this right side up on your ironing board.
2) Heat iron to setting 2.5 (not quite as hot as cotton) depending on the kind of velvet you have
3) Put stamp with right side up on the scrap piece of velvet.
4) Put your velvet pattern piece right side down on the stamp, right where you want it.
4a) Optional: protect velvet with cotton kerchief or scrap
5) Press with hot iron for 5 seconds, don't move the iron around!
I'll need to practice this a bit more, but the stamping works pretty well. We tried different heat settings, and some of my rubber melted to the velvet, but this works the best so far.
