Corsetry tips
Jul. 17th, 2007 11:35 amI've been perusing the memories section of
corsetmakers. I've seen some pretty great corsets out there (and hope to be receiving a real Alexis waist cincher in a few weeks!) and am very inspired to start on the one for
ningyomatsuri. I'm so inspired lately...
Some things I've noted for the basic construction of a corset.
And some other useful hints.
- Use marking tape to mark your pattern pieces (at the top of each piece). Some chalk doesn't come off.
- Narrow marking tape can also be used to stitch boning channels. It's a fixed width and re-usable a couple of times.
- Pattern matching matters most at the waist. Draw lines on the pattern pieces to make sure it matches at the waist. Start at the center front and center back and work towards the sides.
- Sharpen your chicken tool using a dremel's green pointed grinder head.
Comments very welcome!
Some things I've noted for the basic construction of a corset.
- Fuse fashion fabric to strength fabric;
- Assemble corset as usual;
- Trim seam allowance to avoid bulk;
- Baste or fuse waist tape to strength fabric (is attached on each boning channel);
- Boning channels on outside of fashion or in inside of strength fabric;
- Pick out basting of waist tape;
- Lining as a seperate corset to be attached at busk, grommets and binding;
- Use an awl to create holes for grommets and busk;
- Modesty panel consists of same layers as corset. Boning on each side a little way away from the edge;
- Store-bought bias binding is hard to press. Use home-made where possible.
