It's a free road, after all
Jun. 6th, 2006 08:42 amI should not be driving my mother's car -or anyone's car for that matter- any time soon. I'm quite fed up with people, especially those on the road. The problem I mainly have is that I drive well, and I keep to the speed limit. If it's a zone 30, I drive 30, while when you are allowed to cruise 120 kph on the highway, no matter how much gear I'm packing, 120 it will be. (Except for bad weather)
I have been so badly irritated by people on the road this Sunday, I nearly burst a vein. Ofcourse there were mitigating circumstances; BBB had just exploded and I was very tired, so it irked me all a little bit more. But there's just a limit to what I can take. When there is a sign saying you are allowed to go 90 because they're working on the road, I don't care it's a holiday and that the workers will probably not be there, I will still go 90 kph. There's still blocks of concrete on the side of the road.
And any fucking van trying to kiss my rear end can find I will go even slower than that if he doesn't stop bumperhugging!
I was most irritated when we were back in Rotterdam. People had been bugging me on the Highway since Utrecht (we drove via Leiden to drop off some luggage), and when we finally tried to go and find some gas we hit a zone 30. And this absolute cunt passed me with something like 60 kph, looking through her window to see if I was mentally retarded, in such a pointed way that you feel violated by it. If I didn't have a NoKey in my car I might have chased her and hit her car as well. I was really pissed off.
So what basically my problem is, will be and always has been, is that I keep to the speed limit, and nobody else does. This complicates passing cars on the Highway, since everyone else is going 140 and I'm only cruising at 100. It's quite hard to get into a spot on the left lane, especially with heavy traffic. Cue disgruntledness and high blood pressure kicking in.
The worst thing about this all is that while I am not the one in the wrong here, everyone looks at me as if I'm crazy. Other drivers get mad at me, because I'm obeying the law. I am convinced that if everyone would keep to the max speed, there'd be less 'last second stops' and there would be less traffic jams as well.
My father would love to have this discussion with me too. He claims that if there's noone on the road, you're allowed to go as fast as you like. My brother and I don't agree. There could be pedestrians you didn't see until it's too late, etc. My father is a great fan of driving really really fast, especially in Germany. He said "if everyone else is going 140, it's dangerous not to. You're supposed to go with the flow of traffic."
Yes, go with the flow of traffic. Well, the flow of traffic can just go fuck itself. I'm the driver, and I'm the one that's got the lives of my passengers in my hands. And if I fuck up, I could kill somebody else, my passenger and myself. I'm not willing to risk all that just because the flow of traffic demands I should drive faster.

Date: 2006-06-06 12:39 pm (UTC)it ticks me off.
tonight i will have a great time driving around in amsterdam.
enter: Irritated little stressed out carolien in a fiat panda...
you can obviously imagine my tensions. i hate amsterdam when i'm in a car (because tourists jump in front of your car. bikes ignore your car and cabs 'cut you off').
