Date: 2006-01-26 10:18 am (UTC)We know that the world has been warming up and cooling down through the centuries even when there was no such thing as environmental pollution.
Somehwere in the early middle ages the world cooled down a couple degrees, and later it warmed up again a couple degrees. In both cases that had huge consequenses for agriculture. And since people back then largely depended on agriculture (as people do now), these few degrees turned out to be quite disastrous for some. It was a very serious problem. However, it had nothing to do with environmental pollution.
We now do see that the earth is warming up. But we can't be sure about what causes it. We can't be sure that is has anything to do with environmental pollution, but we also can't be sure that it does not have anything to do with it.
Therefore some people say, we shouldn't bother about environmental pollution, since we can't be sure it has anything to do with global warming. This is, as far as I know, the opinion of the Bush administration. The connection between global warming and enovironmental pollution has not been probed, so we don't need to bother abou it.
I say it would be foolish to not bother about environmental pollution, because there is a very good chance that it causes global warming, and if it does, then we'd better stop it before it is too late. There's also a good chance that stopping environmental pollution will do nothing to prevent global warming. In that case it still won't hurt us to stop pollution.
