Two days of rehab

janestarzSomewhere yesterdaymorning NoKey and I found out that the internet was down. Not just The internet - no possibly it was worse. OUR internet. Meaning all those morons out there could surf, be we couldn't.
The answer was in an e-mail from our provider, Xs4all. All in all, Xs4all is a very good provider, upping your bandwith when internet gets cheaper, providing free virus-filters and programs, etc. But this was ridiculous.
NoKey's and my computer are connected. We have a nice little network featuring our two computers and a webserver. The webserver and NoKey's machine are Linux. Mine boots on Linux default, but also has a windoos partition. Last time I booted on Windows was almost three weeks ago.
The e-mail explaining our amputation from the 'net said that 'we' had a virus. Some worm or other. And that we had to fix it. (Not that I could download the newest virus defition files from the net until we set up the proxy settings, but let's ignore this fact).

sjuuls and ran a virus check. NoKey helped me setup the proxy settings and then did his thing. An hour and a half or so later, the scan was done - no viruses. So now what?
This morning, NoKey persued this matter, and he called me around twoish, explaining what had happened. Thanks to the patch he made for the Linux Kernel, and the e-mail alias he made on the mailserver here, somebody sent him a worm. The mailserver forwarded that e-mail to his real mail address, which was filtered by the virusscan. Xs4all detected that the mail came from our connection ... and pulled the plug, thinking that because our mailserver sent out the mail with the virus by forwarding it to NoKey's address, our network/computers were infected. We were 'quarantuined' or something.
Meanwhile, the Dolle Griet site and all dollegriet and janestarz addressses as well as my personal website have been down for two days because of the short-sighted but very responsive response of our provider. I'll have to see if I can claim any damage, but I doubt it. I'll have to upload a sorry-note to both website, and I really don't feel like that right now.
