Linux features fortunes. Like fortune cookies, you read'em when you log in. Mostly, these are quite funny.
Today's fortune cookie was:
"By this time tomorrow, you'll be dead"

I'm not amused. At least I died dyed my hair so that if DEATH comes for me tomorrow, I won't have my roots showing.

In other news, need to write my column for Woodworks. *starts typing like a good termite*

I still haven't figured what runs fortune on login (login doesn't seem to, anyway).

What colour is your hair normally? *plays with hair*

Blonde. But now I'm redheaded again.
There's pictures of me at all ages on my old website. In the pics section (http://www26.brinkster.com/janestar). Please ignore all the pop-ups, they're exactly the reason I now have my own domain. Janestarz.com.

<set mode="ubergeek">
"fortune" is usually run from /etc/profile or in some script run from /etc/profile.
If the "fortune" program is in your path ('echo $PATH' to see what it looks like) you can check if it's installed with 'type fortune'.
If it is not in your path then 'locate fortune' might find it.
If you want a quick way to have a fortune when you log in, you can edit (or create) the file .profile and add the line:
/path/to/fortune
to have a fortune every time you login.
Of course if you use a (turbo) C-shell ((t)csh) instead the files are /etc/csh.login and .cshrc (i think).
And of course if you don't have the fortune program installed (what distro do you use anyway?), you're gonna have to install it first.

NoKey.
P.S. I tried to be concise in the above text so some things may be unclear. Just reply to this post if there's something you don't get.

I'm silly and forgot to check .login =P

That's what you get for assuming the default state of your homedir.

But that was on FreeBSD, where I couldn't figure out where the message was coming from.
