This morning at five I staggered out of bed, semi-jumped on my bicycle and raced towards the countryside. There, in the glorious semi-warmth of early morning I watched the sun arise, in all its semi-ness. The moon blocked the view of the sun. See pictures .

See the sun rise above the treetops (just left from the bush, in between the trees) you can see a small semi-circle.

As soon as it was above the trees, and I stopped looking directly at it, using only the LCD screen of my digital camera to see the wonder.

My camera clearly had difficulties with adjusting to my craziness. First of all, it couldn't focus on anything. I had to point the camera way up into the sky, and just having a bit of trees and sun in the lower part, to make it see the sun on my lcd screen. This is why the rest of the earth is so dark. It almost makes it seem like just another moon rising, while it actually was an eclipsed sun. In the beginning it was deep red, a fact that was sadly lost in the camera.

The second problem for my camera was that I was trying to photograph the freaking SUN! I don't think it liked that very much. But all in all, of the 68 pictures I took there are 6 really good ones. I kept 19 of the 68, which is a 27.9% of successful pictures. It also means every 1.58 minutes I took a good picture, since I was out there photographing for about 30 minutes. Not bad for an amateur, right?

When the sun was so bright and the moon was only for 5% still covering the sun, my camera had enough and me too. My arms were beginning to grow weary from keeping the camera in its fixed position in front of my face, and I cycled back home.

I slept for a few more hours and got out of bed somewhere around noon or something. I showered and linked my camera to the computer to look at the pictures. I had just copied the files to my computer when there was a blackout. Everything just went dead.
After drinking my (luckily finished) coffee, I decided to go to the supermarket. That too was very black. They only had partial power, so the cash registers worked, but not all of the lights did. All the freezers were out and covered with boxes.

When I was standing in the dairy isle I could barely see anybody, just some vague shapes of people. Thank you night blindness *wink*. It really got me giddy though; the whole situation was kind of hilarious. Shopping during a blackout…great going Jayney…
I had the urge to start fondling someone and ask "is this a milk carton? Is it? Excuse me sir, are you the milk?" There were no cute men around though and everybody figured it was a grave situation, so I doubt anyone would have laughed with me.

And now I'm back home, brewing lavender syrup and vliersyrup (for lemonade). Vlier= Sambucus Nigra. It grows in the front yard of this building and I just took 1/6 of the flowers of the plant.

And tonight I work.

Too bad the Boyz didn't want to meet up. And that I have to work. No Utrecht for me today, and no DEW meeting either. *sob*

I am envious. I got to see a lunar eclipse recently, although it was only partial and it was too low in the sky (and I in too hilly and tree covered terrain to see very well) for most of the time. But seeing a solar eclipse has been for a long time one of the few 'I want to do this once before I die' things for me.

Well, lucky for me, Holland is as flat as a dime. Except for Limburg maybe. But since Ede (where I live) is in a wooded area I needed to find some more acceptable countryspace.

I'm glad you like the pictures.

yay!

I only just heard about the eclipse today. I would have loved to be awake to see it, I just didn't know! Thanks for sharing pics....
