The Fantasy Fair 2003
Apr. 27th, 2003 10:22 amEverything is a bit blurry now, but that’s because I’m not feeling too good.
Friday after work I made my way to the depths of Nijmegen, back to the cloister that accommodates students, the place where Inge lives. She wasn’t there yet so my bags and I waited.
We ate tacos and watched a bit of Meet Joe Black, as well as the entire movie A Knights Tale and Mickey Blue Eyes. A friend of hers (Chow) also arrived and we had fun. Slept at half past one.
The next morning at seven the girls got up and showered and started on their attire, hair make-up, robes. We looked absolutely gorgeous. *Grin* Together with Esther and her boyfriend Roland, Thomas, Michiel and Chow (I doubt this is the right spelling) we made our way to Kasteel de Haar, a castle near Utrecht.
Dresscode: Inge wore her wonderful Barok robe with matching umbrella and white wig, Esther wore a corset with top and skirt, Roland was wearing tight black pants with a wonderful crushed velvet tunic, a swordbelt with [larp] sword and legbraces. Michiel wore a wizards robe over his jeans, Thomas wore armor and a cloak and Chow wore a silver tunic with leaves, and suede jacket. I wore my sky-blue gown, white lace, and my hair all in braids and curls.
There was a problem with parking, but we parked in the nearby village and walked the last kilometer to the castle. More and more people, mostly dressed up in fantasy attire, joined us in the walk to the castle. When I walked through the garden gates it felt [again] as coming home.
There were a lot of stands with merchandise, loads of people were walking around and the atmosphere was good. Way in the back of the park, Cauldron had a stand where people were encouraged to enlist for Shadowrifts. I bought nice dragons really cheap, and leather legbraces. The swords that were for sale were all ‘not-quite-it’. I think that in total I spent 40 euro, which is a small part of what I brought. I’m proud of myself. *pat pat*
The most fun was meeting up with so many of my larpfriends! Everybody was in a very joyful mood and looked sincerely happy to see me again. Bob and Theo were in the middle of some roleplaying. Bob was playing some sort of barbarian, Theo played Blind Bart: “I smell someone familiar. What a lovely scent, you must be a lovely lady. Am I right, milady?” Charmeur.
Marijke and Brenda and Mattijs en Sjoerd and Wouter and Henning and Elinor and Brian and Mr Finn and Asterix and David and Gert and Bob and Theo and Sebastiaan and Eline and Tara and Beowulff and so many, many more.
I even saw people I hadn’t seen in quite some time. Sander metalhead and my former crush Mr Guitargod. Somehow he wasn’t quite as attractive as before. They both were feeling kind of strange to see me there, especially because I was one of the costumed freaks.
And I saw Joke and Paul from the DJO as well.
The sadder part was that halfway through the day I felt more and more feverish. I was coming down with something. The rain was getting worse and everybody got cold. Having a wet dress slapping your ankles every step is very bad for one’s mood. We left the fair around five-ish I think. Then we drove to Schoonhoven to Roland’s place. My dip was growing worse, and I got sick a couple of times. Then Gerard lend me his bed and I just slept for two hours while the others ate. Much headache, much nausea.
The idea was to go to Brian’s place and party some more but I just couldn’t. Chow and Inge rode back with me all nauseated on the back seat, to Nijmegen.
After another shower there I felt much warmer and better, and I was fit enough to take a train home.
The Fair last year was in some ways, more fun. But this year I got to meet up with a lot of my friends and not a lot can top that. Highlights of the day were the squirrel we saw in the cloister gardens before we drove off, the dancing and playing with larpfriends, and the larp-catfight between Inge and me. “Ah! You broke my nail!” “Watch out for my hair!”
After a deeeeep sleep I feel much better now. I am wearing my comfy fleece sweater and I won’t work tonight, so I can rest a bit. I’m not nauseated anymore, but my stomach can’t deal with cheese or milk, let alone chocolate or something similar yet.

Date: 2003-05-02 11:51 pm (UTC)2) 'Barok' - I suspect the word you are looking for is 'Baroque' in English. Pronounced exactly the same way, I am not sure why it is spelled that way other than I suspect it is stolen whole-sale from French.
