One of the WIPs I wanted to finish this year were these disaster socks.
I bought Onion sock yarn -- it's special 'cause it's made of nettles and wool -- just to try out and see what the yarn would do.
After turning the first heel I realised it knitted up slightly differently than all my other socks so far. In stead of the perfect 8 sts/inch gauge I was suddenly knitting 9 sts/inch. With only 64 stitches on the needles, that turned out to be a disaster: my sock was far too small to fit comfortably*).

Originally these socks were meant for my father-in-law but by the time I figured out my gauge problem it was already so close to his birthday I just accepted defeat and we got him a different present. But I wasn't ready to give up on the Onion sock yarn though! The math came up with 72 stitches for an 8 inch sock, and I cast on anew.
After the first sock I had used 27/50 grams of my blue yarn, so it's a miracle I could finish them. They have been in hibernation for a bit, but finally they are done.

Socks - Helix socks

I kind of make it into a sport to take pictures of Eisirt's feet, sporting his new hand-knit socks, lazily being propped up in all sorts of comfortable positions. This (admittedly, not very great) picture sports the back rest of our red leather couch.
I should probably knit him some more socks to see if he can still come up with interesting new modeling positions.

The short info:
Knit in helix stripes (2 yarns chasing eachother around), using Onion sock yarn over 72 sts. Heel flap over 36 stitches and picking up 17 stitches for the gusset. Contrast heel, toe and cuff. Played yarn chicken and won.

In other news, the 9 stitches per inch (36 stitches over 10 cm) is, apparantly, my new knitting hand on needles 2.5 cm. I've tightened up my gauge somewhat! That means that I've ordered two new pairs of sock knitting dpn's as I now need 2.75 mm to get "proper sock gauge**)" of 32 stitches per 10 cm. I of course ordered these at Zeven Katten and picked them up today while enjoying proper cat company, laughter and smiles with Tyldak.
