Wol in de Wei and sunburn and new socks

Yesterday I visited Wol in de Wei ("Wool in the meadow") at my friend Tyldak's home. She lives in a teensy village, wedged between two rivers in the mythical Land of Maas and Waal. Their large farmstead comes with a good bit of land (in the middle of the village!) and twice a year they gear up the back yard to welcome visitors. I've been to their home a couple of times and they're still re-decorating and re-purposing the farmhouse. This time there were a few new windows in the outside wall, and a new wall in the stable part, that will house their atelier for dyeing yarn.

Their shop was set up in a tent as it was overcast and drizzly, but it soon cleared up. I claimed a comfortable lawn chair and took out some knitting. Soon enough wannabe_bitch (also known as Kat on this journal) and querca_robur and Judith showed up, and I also hung out with Breiboek, Inge and her mom Mariëtte I know from Ravelry.

I was also gifted with a car boot full of tailoring books and supplies by Marja, who also helps out with the shop at events. One of her old friends was a tailoress, and the supplies and books had to go to a "good home". Marja saw how enthusiastic I am about my tailoring and my education, and I was deemed "worthy". It'll be a trade of sorts, as I'll be donating hours to making Marja a few good items of clothing, but it's a wealth of knowledge and I can't even start sorting through it as it's all packed up in boxes until we get the atelier space. (Soon, after the exams!)

As for yarn, I forgot to bring the money I was gifted by some for my birthday, and I only picked up two 50 gram skeins of Onion Nettle sock yarn for a pair of birthday socks for my father-in-law. I've been wanting to try my hand at the Onion yarn with nettles in stead of nylon for a while, and since my father-in-law loves boats and blue, I have deicided to knit him this pair of blue boat socks.
We spent the afternoon knitting and chatting happily away. I had brought salted cashew nuts as a "healthy" snack (no sugar, but 1% of that stuff is salt!!!) and I cast on a new pair of socks.

Although it was only partially sunny, I got a bad sunburn on my arms, and the little v-neck at my chest. By the time I realised my skin was done with the sun it was already nearing four o'clock, so it's a bad sunburn. I've been putting aftersun on my arms like there's no tomorrow.
But we had a great time, it was a good mix of friends, larpers and Ravelers and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Today I'm lying low and knitting. This yarn was gifted to my by my mom, and I've cast on the second sock of the free sock knitting class on Craftsy. The first pair has turned out to be my favourite pair of socks, so I'm looking forward to this pair. It's from a different colourway, but also in Opal sock yarn, covers some different techniques than the first one, and has a twisted stitches motif on the top of the foot.

Kometenfloep

Omdat ik in de Lidl nog eens een rondje "Wat zit er eigenlijk in?" ben gaan maken en ik eigenlijk gewoon geen suiker meer wil eten behalve wat er natuurlijk in de voedingsmiddelen voorkomt, staat er nu een enorme pan op het vuur te pruttelen. De inhoud (in volgorde van toevoegen):

2 gesnipperde uien

2 liter water

4 bouillonblokjes

1 rode paprika in blokjes

peper

thijm

basilicum

5 blikken tomatenblokjes

een dikke stronk prei in kwart ringetjes

drie ons wortelen in kleine blokjes

drie stengels bleekselderij

Gewoon, gezonde, huisgemaakte tomatensoep. Je zou het zelfs kunnen wecken, als je de soep voor consumeren maar een kwartier laat doorkoken (tegen botulisme). Maar dit is bestemd voor de vriezer, om "haal maar watjes" tegen te gaan. Als Eisirt werkt maak ik ook vaak soep met brood. Gewoon een lekkere bruine boterham met kaas, en dan elk hoekje in de soep dopen. Zalig! Deed ik op de middelbare school ook, met mijn zweetkaas-boterhammen in de automaten-opkikker.
En de lijst groente die hierin zit zorgt er ook voor dat je nog een beetje in de schijf van vijf zit. (Hoeveel zout dit eigenlijk oplevert, weet ik niet precies. Want ook al zijn het vier bouillonblokjes, het is ook wel echt een BOEL soep.)

Maar wat blijkt nu? In de blikken soep van de Lidl zit suiker. Ik denk zelfs dat het heel lastig is om soep zonder suiker te vinden als je het niet zelf zou maken. En als er geen suiker inzit, dan zit er wel glucosestroop in. Stel je dat eens voor! Pak de schenkstroop die je over je pannenkoeken doet en hou die eens boven een kom soep. Niet zo'n smakelijk idee!
De enige soep waar ik niet direct iets aan kon zien was de erwtensoep, maar die lust ik niet. Bovendien vermoed ik dat de maltodextrine ook suiker-gerelateerd is (dextrose = druivensuiker).
Niet alleen in de blikken soep zit trouwens suiker. Lees ook maar eens goed de ingrediëntenlijst van de bouillonblokjes na....

Tomatensoep noem ik steevast kometenfloep. Dit komt van een toverrecept wat madam Mikmak in de Donald Duck ging bereiden. Ze had een prachtig recept voor een toverdrank, en moest daar van alles in doen wat ze niet echt thuis kon brengen. Wat bleek: ze had eigenlijk een bril nodig, en kon het recept dus helemaal niet goed lezen. Het was namelijk een recept voor tomatensoep! Sindsdien is het kometenfloep.
