It's time to frog again. All my work from yesterday, turning the heel particularly, was for naught.
Why? Because I didn't read one sentence in the instructions.
The increases for the gusset are charted, and silly me, I just blindly followed the cart. Or at least, I followed the chart I made which was based on the low and high instep charts provided in the pattern. Both these charts increased the gusset to 15 stitches wide, so my chart was 13 rows high to get to the needed 15 stitches.
What I didn't read in the pattern was the sentence: "Continue in this fashion until you have increased 31 stitches in total."
I first noticed it because Fiberrachel had finished her Aragorn socks (wow, super speedy!) and her heel decreases overlapped both of the twisted stitches cable on the side of the foot. My decreases only overlapped one of the cables and lined up with the other. I asked on the KAL-forum, counted my stitches and then re-read the instructions. And then I noticed the sentence I had missed the first time around.

"Are you sure they won't fit?" someone asked on the forum. Sadly, no. They won't. Although I don't like fitting my socks when I'm knitting them as my stitches get pulled to their stretched width on my foot, I did so now. The instep is far too low because there aren't enough stitches on the needles there. I'm happy I didn't snap a needle when I tried it on, because they were pushed into the skin quite badly.
Next steps.
This afternoon I'm facing the fun task of frogging back to the gusset, and then continuing my increases until I finally do have the required number of stitches before I can start on the heel again. This will also increase the sock height a bit more, as you can see in the picture the cuff is now slightly lower than the ridge my day-to-day socks pressed into my skin.
Still smiling, but I hope sock #2 will be twice as easy now that I've made so many mistakes in sock #1.
