Food Review: Koi - Sushi & Grill
Feb. 8th, 2013 10:04 pmNoKey and I met up on Eindhoven train station and while we were walking down the platform I suggested going out for sushi. I knew there was at least one joint we hadn't tried yet, and we looked it up on Iens.nl.
It turned out Yaya, which we had intended to visit, was nowhere to be found, but instead we walked to the Heuvelring and ate at Koi Sushi & Grill, one of many all-you-can-eat sushi restaurants that serve a variety of Japanese dishes.
Because we know the type of restaurant so well, we can easily compare our favorite dishes between restaurants of this formula. Mushroom Yaki, Gyoza, Sake Maki and Yaki Meshi are always on the list of things we order.
The fried mushrooms and courgette (zuccini) were prepared with soy sauce and a little disappointing. NoKey's fried vegetables and my fried rice came very nearly dripping with oil, but I am semi-used to this for the rice. It doesn't really make for a nice final dish of the meal, but I have it anyway. The nigirizushi was delicious, and we ordered several rounds of salmon and tomago (sweet omelette).
The staff was friendly enough, but always busy with serving dishes to their tables. The decor wasn't all that pretty. I was facing away from the street towards the back of the restaurant. Only two small paintings of koi fish to distract from the white walls made for a very stark view. There were no Japanese decorations like the little flags I like to see above the bar. NoKey had a considerably nicer view and not just because I graced it with my presence *wink*.
I must say I'd like to try this one again, as I didn't have my favorite dish (Gyu Niku Yaki) and you can wake me up in the middle of the night for edamame. They do have lovely white booths where you can sit with a group of people, and I'd like to try one of those next time.
