New Years wishes
Jan. 1st, 2012 03:32 pmAnother year without unasked intimacy at the office. The New Years Wishes are always slightly awkward, especially between men and women. Male colleagues give a firm handshake, grrr, happy new year man, let's do a beer some time.
Female colleagues are more difficult. Ooh, do I kiss her? Or is that too intimate? The norm over here is three kisses for people you know well, at birthdays or new year. If you know them really well, you might even greet them with three kisses at other places too, and if you're really close a single kiss and something murmured into one ear (we're picking that up from tv).
But colleagues...ooh. Tricky social territory.
I was never a fan of kissing for New Year or birthdays, but for some of my male colleagues, I'd make an exception. The rest just got a distant handshake, elbows locked.
This comic, from 2009, still strikes me as very appropriate.

And for all of you on the flist: don't worry. I wouldn't. Not really.
