A day on the town
Sep. 25th, 2004 10:53 amYesterday sure was a long day. We got up earlier than the rest of the week, and after coffee and a couple of sandwiches caught a subway into Rotterdam around ten-ish. First stop was Van Doorn, to drop off Brother Spawn for repairing. There was a woman picking up a brand spanking new sewing machine in a box which looked expensive, and I wondered what kind it was, while drooling over the fournitures they have there (ribbons, lace, etc).
Brother Spawn soon was unloaded and I explained what ailed him. I bought some extra-firm black thread for my new dagger, and we were off.
Schroeder was next. It was coupons-day, and I picked up some nice metres of wool for 10 and 11 euros, and a bit of accessoiry for Xantara's new dress, as well as some really nice suedine for NoKey. Donw the stairs to their basement, where I found some ribbon for a microfiber camisole I'm putting together. Next stop: lunch!
It was already going on towards 12ish, and we decided to have lunch halfway to the shop where they supposedly sell Japanese tabi, at the Delifrance. We had a lot of food there, and it was yum. NoKey ran to the library to pick up some cash at the ATM machine there, and we had sandwiches and tea and milk and stuff.
And off we were, to the Jonkerfransstraat, where we found a Toko which indeed sold Kong Fu shoes and tabi, but they were not going to fit on any western foot. And NoKey and I have very western feet. Once outside, I suggested we walked on a bit to Strieder. I had had my eye on a well-braided, 7 foot bullwhip. I asked one of the shopkeepers if I could try it out and it cracked at my first try. Go me! I'm dangerous now.
More dangerous than before, yes.
I also bought 1000 silver rings you can hammer through cloth for lacing up shirts at a really good price. Normally you pay that price for 50 rings at a sewing shop. I got a nice discount from those nice gentlemen. I also picked up some leathergrease for the whip and my armyboots and some spray for my suede skirt, and a rabbitskin (darkbrown with gold) for Xantara's bag. Good buys. (I'm still ashamed I bought a rabbitskin, I never buy fur, only thirdhand fur, so that the animal didn't die for me...I'm sappy that way).
We then sauntered back, avoided some rain, and went into Harolds - artsupplies galore. NoKey checked out the foams they had (v. expensive) while I looked at the calligraphy department and bought some paper. After Harolds we walked to Pipoos, a hobbyshop downtown (where we started), and bought molds for making candles! They were pretty expensive, but I bought two really nice ones, some wicks, and some colourant for candlewax (it's nice that I got all those brown candles but I'd like to make NICE colours).
Then we had just two more stops planned: the kiteshop in Schiedam, and then to pick up Brother Spawn and go home. The kiteshop was great. Really a lot of great kites and so many happy colours, I thought I had accidentally eaten the wrong mushrooms with my doughnut. The doggies (spektekkels, i.e. a form of Jack Russels) were cute, and NoKey tested some carbon-fiber and glass-fiber rods we might be able to use for weapon-cores.
Since Voltar lived around the corner we couldn't help but wonder whether he'd be there. So we rang his doorbell and there he was! He welcomed us in, surprised and excited, and made us tea. We talked a bit, and he invited us for dinner and a movie. Langelaar would be coming over as well, and they had planned minced-meat. So after pondering tuna spaghetti, we ended up shopping for more minced meat, and I baked hamburgers on buns, while NoKey devoured 2 packages of salad with some buns. We watched South Park (the passion of the jew) and Little Nicky. It was great fun. Voltar was really happy to see us. And I must say it's always fun to hang out with him. It had been too long since we had a movie-night at his place.
We were home past eleven, but we had walked our miles for the day, made a friend happy, and well...I can pick up Brother Spawn today.
