Larp: The Jarinsveld experience.
May. 11th, 2003 12:32 pmEven though I didn’t have much fun in going there (getting into the wrong train by haste and a faulty internet route planner) I arrived at Jarinsveld at the same time as Big Bear Mr. Finn. Jasper drove our bags and we walked a bit among the nice wooded area of Zeist. We were going to larp in the forest just behind the flat were my aunt Chris used to live.
After setting up this-and-that hill for the castle, and another one for the monster place, we changed into our outfits. Half of us were Shades and the other half (including us) were Mercenaries. The players arrived and we were sent to bug them.
Our priest or mage (I am not good at the magic stuffsels at larp, I have yet to play a mage or priest or druid or witch) blinded them for a minute, our General ordered them to lie down on the floor, except for their leader. The players obeyed every word he said, which was good. We took their weapons and their money, I got to hit Brian for talking. Then we told them to count to sixty and remain lying down and we ran down the path.
At the end of the path, we changed to Gobbolls, a crossing between a Goblin and a troll. As the players came walking down the path, we approached them as hideous, irritating beings. As they had no weapons except a few daggers we didn’t steal, we poked them and laughed about them.
Until Henrik showed up as evil black mage thingy. Mighty and “uh-oh!” We looked at him and started bugging him, until he called upon the powers of darkness and cast a thunderbolt at us. Vincent and I were in the line of fire, he pointed at one of us but we both went down. I love falling down spectacularly at larps. *Grin*
Slowly we regenerated and I got hit a couple more times, with Fear spells and another thunderbolt. Then we let them alone and went back to the Monster hill.
There we changed into our next roles. Vincent played a merchant, who was to sell the player’s weapons back to them. Charlotte played his slave, and I was a whore who traveled with them. My master (the Merchant) was both my pimp and lover.
I tried my best to get some of the players into ‘having some fun’ with me, but not one of the elves took the bait. They were too upset about me whipping the slave. (I brought my whip and just showed off with it, I never hit Charlotte for real, but it was great fun). The other player’s group (the elves had been bugged by the shades, we as mercs had stolen from the other group of players, most of which were members of “The Clan of the Dead Chihuahua [sp?]).
Brian and Elmar were both men from the Chihuahua group, and were sort of not really interested in my services, but eventually Elmar took the bait because of some weird deal about scrolls. After him worshipping another dog of passers-by he and I snuck behind a tree. It was quite awkward because I’ve known him for a long time and this was the first time in quite a long while since I could actually stand him. We were giggling before we had In Character sex – meaning, standing behind a tree, making weird noises and rattling the tree a bit. When we returned people joked we did it ‘doggy-style’. *Giggle*
Anyways, after some more haggling with potential customers, none of whom required my services, suddenly a genie came out of some lamp. She started throwing spells around; silence, itch, sleep, etc. When my character noticed what she was doing she cried out “you’re a mean person! Why do you…” before the genie cast a ‘silence’ spell on me. A pixie gave me back the ability to speak but then I was the victim of a sleep spell.
To cut a long story short, after four sleep spells [and every time waking up with “sure I’ll go another time, as long as you pay”] some mercenaries came into the village. New potential customers! So I frolicked their armor and brushed up to their manly muscles [*barf*]. Nobody took the bait though, and they started fighting because they were denied beer. I picked up a sword, not knowing how to use it, holding it out the wrong way, etc.; then fleeing to the nearest man to find protection.
Shortly after, we left the village, leaving the slave rented to the elves.
Then we changed into merc attire, and the whole bunch of mercs, general, captain, three shields as shield-wall, two scouts and a lotta bad motha’s marched into the village. The general demanded his money, and the players came out to play. I was scout/right flank, and enjoying it, until Julian who was a mage got hit in the eye by a crossbow bolt. It scared the hell out of everyone, but he was fine. His luck these are larparrows, not real arrows. The fighting continued, and soon we were a bit scattered, surrounded by players who were focusing on the general and the mage. The shield wall went on ahead towards our main target: the bar! Burn down the inn and down goes the morale.
One of the mercs, Mark Cole, played by Rene, was telling players that the captain had gone crazy and that they should meet with him later, but when the captain saw this, he called Mark a traitor and punched him in the ribs. The blow was a bit too hard, but Rene played this really well. It was to show the players the madness of the captain. I love these “punches” and playing them out but everybody’s afraid to hit me because I’m a girl. Anyway, the mercs retreated, and the inn was in flames.
I changed into browns and greens for my next role. Julian had thought of a side plot, and we led the players to a grove of ‘ancient trees’. Rene, Julian, ‘the captain’ [I don’t recall his name] and me were Ents! I was an ent! The captain was just a young sapling and talked quite fast (two words per breath), but Rene was a skeptical ent, Julian the neutral one, and I was the optimist Ent. We talked one word per breath, and the players got impatient. Heheh. They were supposed to stop the ‘man with two scythes’ but they failed miserably, of course. The elves stayed with us a bit longer, wanting to hear our stories.
“How ….. much ….. time ….. do ….. you …… have ….. ? ….. We …. have …… many …… stories …… but …… they …… all …… are ……. of ……. many …… words …..”
*Grin* Playing an ent was fun. I played an ent! *** YAY! ***
After the ent scene (and their miserable failure of the battle with the man with two scythes) I returned to the monster hill, and we changed into shades for the last battle. The players finally met up with Mark Cole, who led them to a meeting between the captain and the Shadowbitch. The final battle was great. As a shade, you did damage by just touching someone (well, try “just” touching someone who has three others around him and all four of them have a sword). After doing three damage or ten hits, you’d die. So I died after a while just ‘flowing’ around, and then the Shadowbitch raised me. The captain betrayed the general, he wanted to sacrifice the general, but the players came to the rescue. They apparently forgave the general for trashing the inn, and fought against the captain, the Shadowbitch, the Shades and the Shadow warriors (shades with swords and shields and bodies).
After this we cleaned up and packed our bags. At Brian’s house in Woerden we had an aftertalk (like: order food, wait 90 minutes for it to arrive, listen to stories of other larps, and then discover what you ordered, isn’t there). I was home at midnight [and slept like a logger].
I liked playing with Vincent. He’s a good roleplayer and he wasn’t at all embarrased or shy.
