janestarz: (Knitting - Garments)

At Marjolein's birthday bash this weekend I was handed an old pair of socks I knitted years ago (in 2016). A big hole had formed in the heel of one. Would I be able to fix that perhaps?
So once back home I found a skein of a similar pink Fabel yarn, looked up an "how to Afterthought Heel" guide on the internet*) and set to work.

Picking up the stitches was a little tricky. I had picked up needles 2.5 mm to do so and my nice pair of 2.5 mm needles is currently in use in a sock project, so I was stuck using a set of slightly rough and crude needles. Not my favourite to knit with.
The first row was really hard to knit. The picked up stitches were already knit before so there wasn't much room for the needle and some of the yarn had felted. I did the best I could with the mix of knit and purl stitches and quickly enough came to the end of the first round. It was all smooth sailing from there on.

And an afterthought heel is not that hard. It's a simple matter of picking up the right number of stitches, decreasing every other round, stopping before you run out of stitches, and kitchenering it all closed again. I was pleased with the result and have crappy winter evening posts to show for it. And a happy Marjolein!

I did decide to upload these to Ravelry**). (You can view the two photo's there because hotlinking is bad form.) There's a picture of the heel with the hole in, and one where the pair is shown after the fact. I don't think there's a big difference between the two heels visually and I just hope they are comfortable.
Cutting the original heel out (with a healthy safety margin!) was scary though.

*) Dear internet, not everything has to be a video. I know that YouTube encourages you to do that because they can sell more ads that way, but a simple step-by-step with clear pictures is just so much better and easier to follow and I don't have to pause it every 10 seconds!

**) Since when can we upload photos to Ravelry without having to pay for that feature anyway? And: if it's free, where are you selling our content to? You have to make money somehow!
