The boys I play D&D and Blades in the Dark with have varying schedules. Dan hasn't been able to host D&D for a while now and Olly wrapped up the first season of Blades in the Dark a few weeks back. Then Brasak offered to run a Traveller campaign. Everyone was in, the boys dove face-first into the rulebooks and we had Session Zero last week and last night to set up characters.
Traveller is quite a bit different from D&D: to set up your character you have to work through the formative years, including a couple of checks whether you get into university, whether you survive, what career you want, whether you survive that, and Life Events. Just the fact that your intended character can die during character creation is kind of special. ((Read more here))

Qupar grew up in the wrong neighbourhood and dreamed of working for the police to make the city safer. He was accepted into university at age 18. He mastered in Hydroponics and took a minor in Launguages (Zdetl).
During University, a fellow student was growing drugs in their hydroponics research, so Qupar ratted them out to the dean, gaining an enemy in the process. He also gained an extra skill in Streetwise.
(How this happened: I had to roll an intelligence check to see if I got admitted into university, then I had to roll for a Life Event. My roll was checked against a table and the result was that I got either a rival or an enemy, so I chose an enemy and then created this explanation for it.)

At 22 years old, he joined Law Enforcement, and soon was promoted to Corporal. (Do you survive your job? + Do you gain a promotion? checks. And then a Life Event:) A senior agent helped the career along as well. However, at age 26, he learns something he shouldn't know and gains another enemy. Meanwhile, his career is going well and Qupar is promoted to Sergeant, gaining skills in Communication and Unarmed Melee Combat.

At age 30, his life takes a turn for the worse and Qupar is severely injured on the job. His medical bills are only covered for 50% by his employer, so he gains a debt of 12.500 credits that he still needs to pay off.
When he gets promoted to Detective, he has gained the skills Recon, more Unarmed Melee Combat and Investigation skills.
By the time he is 34 years old, at the rank of Lieutenant, Qupar leaves the force. As a goodbye bonus he gets 2000 credits when he musters out, paying off some of his medical debt. He has trained his Medic skills, and can now use a Vacc suit. He is also been enhanced by a cybernetic implant that was even upgraded to a better version recently. Aside from the 2000 credit parting bonus he also gains two Ship Shares, which will be possible future occupation.

Meanwhile, Olly's character is playing a space marine who jumped out of planes a lot, but has now aged considerably and his age is starting to show in decreasing stats. Matt's character got fired from his journalism career and is quite good at carousing, and Dan plays an enterprising Bwap who works on Eisirt's ship the Penelope. We all managed to survive our formative years and now we can shop for some supplies and set out in the wonderful world of Traveller.

The character creation process was already a lot of fun. Aside from rolling to see if you manage to survive the 4 year term, the Life Events you roll for instantly create a background and because of that your background is teeming with possibilities, hooks for the GM to latch onto, and creating a depth that just writing a sentence down in a Word document can't do. I kind of love this and I might have to use these tables to roll up my next larp character as well.

Wel heel leuk dat je zo iemand kan spelen die al wat ouder is. Meestal begin je met net een paar vaardigheden die leuk zijn voor een 16 jarige, maar waar je geen 40-er mee kan spelen, dat is dan echt veel te weinig.
