The last two weeks were insanely busy and it doesn't look like it's going to lighten up (yet). February was booked with appointments and it looks like March isn't going to be any better. Next to previous customers coming back in and new commissions from old (LARP) friends, there are some people being referred to me as well.

One return customer needed to have his viking trousers adjusted, because "the Covid bug shrank them". Just before he came in with them I remembered what I had made for him: a pair of viking trousers which was basically all the fabric just gathered in pleats onto a waistband. I sent him a message the day before he came in, to suggest he bring the trousers along. Maybe I could just make a new waistband for them and they'd fit him again.
The problem with making trousers is that it's very hard to measure the new waistband size. Everyone likes to wear their trousers to a different tightness. What one finds comfortable, another might find too tight or too restricting. It also didn't help that this customer is very overweight and it was hard to figure out where he would wear the trousers. In the end I made a new waistband and pleated most of the pleats back...but the new waistband was just way too large now.

He didn't mind, luckily, and would be glad to wear the trousers with a belt for his larp last weekend. I was glad I said 'no' to making him a pair of dress trousers for work. I could probably manage making something in his size, but with all the rest of the work I have lying around now I don't have the spoons to spare to wrap my head around it.

Same with a question about a bespoke corset pattern. I could probably draft one from the tightly fitted dress pattern, but I've never done it and it requires quite a few fittings. I'd rather try my hand at those for myself first, to see if I can and what kind of results it would yield, before doing something like that for a client.

Luckily, there are going to be some changes! Last week a possible intern applied for the position I had up on Stagemarkt.nl since November. She had found an internship initially, but they had told her to just do the order picking and she decided that's not what she needed for her internship. It's a crazy notion to me to have your intern to do order picking if they are there to learn to be an assistant fashion tailor.
We met up on Wednesday morning and she came in with a big smile on her face and a shining charisma - already stepping into the room she was so happy to be there. We had a short chat about what her school expects she learns in the internship and I asked her what she would like to learn as well. She is hoping to practice some special techniques some more. It's not something I do a lot of, so I'll be sure to add some just for practice for her.

Looking forward to it! She's going to be with me for nine weeks if all goes well, and it'll be great to have someone around to chat to.
