Happily knitting along, trying to find the widest part of my bust while the front panel was shaping more and more into a V. I knew I had to try it on at some point.
The news was not great. The armscye was definitely too large and too loose.

02_Poison Oak - Armscye problems

After finishing my raglan increases the pattern said to just knit the front and back panels together and place the sleeve stitches on hold. I've never seen it done that way, in any other pattern I've knit before I had to cast on some stitches to bridge the gap between the front and back panel. It makes sense as well, if you look at other patterns. The ones for dressmaking also have a little horizontal bit under the arm bridging that gap.
Where the pattern said not to cast on any stitches, I cast on 4 stitches. It still didn't seem like a lot (I've done 8 before as well) but not casting on anything for under the arm didn't feel right. And that is why I ended up with an armscye that was sagging too low and was far too loose in general. I get that this is a jumper, but I need my sleeves to conform to my body a bit. This would start the sleeves some 5 centimeters under my armpit!

I never even counted the number of stripes I had to frog to get back to the point where the sleeves were separated. It was a lot. I frogged them all and made massive spagetti that took me about two hours to untangle. Having three skeins of yarn attached to the work didn't help.

Could it be I actually didn't need to alter the pattern AT ALL? What witchcraft is this?

03_Poison Oak - Better armscye
(Please excuse the sweaty armpit, it was the end of the day)

I cast on 0 stitches under the arm instead, just attaching the front panel to the back panel an placing the sleeve stitches on hold. Just as the pattern prescribed for my size. After four rows I fit the new thing again. So much better!

Next up: checking my patterns to find the distance between armpit and bust. I can easily do this at work, where I have self-drafted patterns that fit me really well. I keep going straight until the widest part of my bust and then I can start decreasing for the waist.
I'm not sure I need waist shaping anymore, what with my winter weight hugging the Covid worries around my waist. I might shape it a little just to make it more flattering. I should also check out how much length between the fullest part of my bust and my natural waist.

The boring part starts now. Just knitting straight stockinette. I should probably dive into a fun new series while I do that.
