Competition Round 1

janestarzSunday morning, 7 am CET, my mailbox received the Round 1 pattern. Now that we were divided into teams we start the battle in earnest. Only 40 people will continue to the next round in each team; the 40 people that knit their socks and submit them to the mods fastest.
Team E is a pretty relaxed and slow team, with people working full-time jobs. We do get a say in which teams we prefer and lucky for me the mods listened.
Unlucky for my team, I was still down with the flu and could cast on right away. The sock has a few beads, knotted on a long loop of yarn into berries; but the rest of the sock is very vanilla. With 64 rows on the leg, a very nearly standard heel flap and gusset and at least 57 rows on the foot, it's a matter of perseverance though.
Almost vanilla sock...to be embroidered later with leaves and stems.
What irks me most about the pattern is the gauge, at 9 sts/inch it's very tight and I do try to get gauge accurately this round. My hands and fingers do not enjoy this gauge, and soreness sets in quickly. At a looser gauge, the socks would be even longer than they are now. Although I can't quite match row gauge despite my best efforts, so my socks will be longer than the standard 9 inch foot length.
By just adding 5 rows on the foot, I am getting a nice size 45, for Doc Inge who said she would enjoy a hand-knitted pair.

And today....I just can't be bothered! I fled into the Sims 4, coughing up the remnants of my cold. I very nearly finished the gusset decreases on the second sock, so next up is the long vanilla stretch to the toe. I'll tackle it tomorrow, while Eisirt is working and I can binge Star Trek TNG. I promised myself to start the embroidery once both socks are finished, and that will happen this weekend, no doubt.
Still, at this tight a gauge it's a miracle I'll probably finish this pair on Monday....maybe even on Sunday.
