Stir-crazy
Apr. 5th, 2017 01:23 pmThe sugar crash had a few death throes but I feel more like myself now. The worst was the feeling of rushed buzz, nothing I created made sense and a few sock projects saw frogging: "I'll knit a Zag! No! A Jaywalker! No! Something else. ANYTHING else!!!"
And then: "This is cool, a mystery sock knit-a-long! I'll take this pink yarn and this variegated blue. No! Pink with bright green, it'll be spring-like. Ugh, what was I thinking. Purple and pink! We need more unicorns in this world!!"
It's all settled down a bit now. I refused to frog the MKAL socks again and I kind of like the idea of sweet, sweet colours and cotton socks I can wear year-round, hopefully without getting itchy ankles. I've finished the second clue now, knitting one sock at-a-time.

The world really does need more unicorns.
2017 Year of the Sock is shaping up well, as I'm using the half-skein leftovers from a pair of socks I knitted for Eisirt earlier and cast on a simple ribbed sock for him with a different contrast yarn. Took a while to figure out which pattern to use -- Zag wouldn't work, nor the Jaywalkers, but I found "The Weasley Rib" which will be great to do. Easy, manly, pretty. No pictures yet as I'm only in the first few rows of the ribbing of the cuff.
The Ravelry search option is wonderful, though, I found the ribbed socks I wanted by searching for "fabric characteristics: ribbed" "free pattern" "fingering weight" and might even have narrowed it down more by adding preferred gauge.
There's a few half-skeins of yarn left over which I can use up (I love "all used up!") by knitting such simple patterns with contrast toe, heel and cuff. If there's slightly less than half a skein left, I can knit in a slightly more relaxed gauge which uses less yarn or add a longer cuff or a third colour into the mix.
Next up: The specifications were published for the next round of Sock Madness, which means the pattern can drop any moment now. As usual, I'm having a hard time deciding which yarns to pick, and I probably can't until I know what I'm knitting. I can tell you, however, that it's easier to pick a yarn to go with a pattern than it is to find a pattern that will work for a yarn. I'll help out my mom with moving furniture after their new kitchen was installed today, so I hope to come home tonight or wake up tomorrow and find a pattern in my inbox. If not tonight, I can knit a few rounds on the Weasley socks.
The specs call for 2 colors of sock yarn (designer estimates 75 grams/275 m main colour and 50 grams/210 m yds of contrast colour per pair)
with a gauge of: 33 sts by 35 rows per 10 cm in stranded stockinette stitch. Stranded stockinette! A clue!

Possible combinations I like:
Grey and Green -- nice and soft
Purple and Grey -- kapow!
Black and Purple -- Drow socks!
Black and Yellow -- Bee Socks!
Black and Bright green -- Poison Ivy socks!
But it all depends on the pattern we will get. Anywhere in the next day or so, so hopefully I can cast on tonight. Let me know which combo you'd like to see!
