Although the pattern is still much lighter on the hands than the first sock of the Madness, the strain of knitting for hours on end is taking its toll. I'm not ready to give up yet, but I should be careful.

Tuesday morning I was here...
Dropped Madness

...and it was all looking pretty rosey. I'm knitting this pair of socks for HowlingMoon and decided to knit the largest size, but they look to be huge! Luckily, I cast off the cuff last night and could fit them, even without a heel inserted yet, and they weren't as huge as I thought. They would probably even fit me, which makes me wonder if this will really be the size 39 I was aiming for.

Proper supervision during the MadnessOn Wednesday evening I had a fitting after a long day of work, and I was sooo tired I decided to take Thursday off and knit. There was of course plenty of kitteh supervision, as Doortje loves to sit in my lap, although she leaves pretty soon because she's not getting the pettings she is due.

This morning I wanted to pick up the stitches to knit the heel. This is an afterthought heel, so you 'park' the stitches for the heel by knitting them in waste yarn when you get to the right point. The rest of the sock will just be a long tube, no funky shapes in your lap, and knit the heel last. That means that after finishing the cuff, there's still a heel to do and fitting will not be true until the heel is in.

I had a little wrestle with the technique, resulting in interesting diagrams (drawn by hand, photographed and then posted on the Ravelry forums by mods) and I think I've got the gist of it now, but I still need to make it happen. That's something to do when this update's done (dinner is in the oven, 45 minutes to go).

In other news, I've also decided that yes, I will try and compete in the Sock Madness as well as I can, hands allowing, but next year I will only be a cheerleader. I like the concept of everyone knitting the same pattern, but I'm really easily stressed, and I find I'm projecting work-stress and general busy-ness to the Sock Madness as well, which makes this far more stressful than it needs to be.
However, I doubt my Year of the Sock would have been as much fun without Sock Madness, and I promised this to myself, and why the hell not, right? So for now, it's still a race! I should get down to business and get that heel done so I can start on the second sock.

En je kan nu zeggen dat je een keer mee hebt gedaan!
Anders denk je elk jaar weer: 'had ik maar!'
