Yava'in asked me to knit her socks to keep her warm after her surgery. But I didn't want to spoil the surprise for her, so I posted the "Murder Mystery" picture of the casting-on and then deftly knitted away. I combined her request with one of my New Year's Knitting Resolutions:
"To knit at least 1 pattern from my knitting books -- why else would I have them?"

I chose a happy colour scheme and combined it with a soft cyan for the contrast toe, heel and cuff. The top of the foot and the leg are knit in the Koffieboontje pattern. This is a Dutch classic, re-published in the "Sokken brei je zo!" booklet I have on my shelf. The main body of the sock (how many stitches to cast on, how many stitches for the gusset, and how to knit the heel) are all from my favourite Sokbasis pattern, which allows me to knit socks in all sizes for people without the need for a fitting.

But after the pair was done, I had quite a bit of yarn left. I weighed it and noticed that I'd only used 45 grams of the 100 gram skein.
Well, that means I could knit another pair of socks out of it. And why not knit Yavain a second pair of socks?

This time, I chose a muted lime for the contrast toe, heel and cuff and the Skyp rib pattern for the top of the foot and the leg.

I finally got to give her the socks as a present yesterday when we visited. She's recuperating and quite sick of lying on the couch all day, but she was very happy we visited. I hope the socks will cheer her up and help with a speedy recovery.
