School assignment progress
May. 10th, 2016 09:03 amThree assignments left to go. Since writing stuff down about it keeps everything clear and thus keeps me sane, here we go.
Blazer
I drafted a blazer pattern to my measurements but I did one calculation wrong right in the beginning, which means my armscye is too small and my sleeve is wrong too. It's a stupid mistake to make, but luckily I can correct it easily without having to start over.
Teacher José also implied that it would be very helpful to have a blazer block with a smaller shoulder dart on hand for the exams, so I guess I'll have to include that in my next draft.
If I focus on this early this week, I can send it to her to check. We've got an extra lesson next week as our normal lesson day is a holiday (2nd day of Ascension).
Men's trousers
I wanted to make this awesome hunky-dory tight cargo pants, but I'm struggling with the fit. After two mock-ups I'm still not happy with the fit. José told me to just make the trousers from the pattern I've come up with so far, but I'm not feeling the love. There's fit issues everywhere and they might be due to me measuring wrong. The back leg is too wide and the crotch length is too long.
I've suggested starting over from the jeans block, which José doesn't encourage, no doubt worrying I will not have enough time to draft another block and work from there.
I'm still on the fence on what I want to do. I can quite easily pump out a new block, but it's even easier to just sew a pair of trousers from the block I have now. I might even be able to hand in the trousers next lesson, leaving me loads of time to focus on the blazer.
But part of me loves the idea of having a kick-ass pair of trousers for the post-graduation exhibition. Drafting a jeans block shouldn't be too hard, should it?
Men's shirt
Last Sunday I was unhappy about having to sew on the weekend, so Eisirt said "why don't you just work on the muslin for the shirt?"
I wasn't sure I wanted to do a second muslin, but now that I have made one, I'm happy I did. I really want to be sure the shirt fits my stepfather very well so he will wear it to the office proudly. My fabrics aren't cheap and it would be such a waste of work if it didn't look right.
It also gave me a chance of trying my hand at some of the sewing techniques I'm a bit unfamiliar with (just like I did with the second, but wearable mock-up of the trousers for Eisirt). Here's my underarm seam, sewn from the wrist to the hem (because it's not a fitted shirt). We call this a jeans-seam: cut one side of the seam allowance short, fold the other seam allowance under and stitch it down over the shorter seam allowance. We have to finish all seams so that you can't see frayed edges, zig-zag or overlocked stitches.
Wrestling a whole shirt sleeve over the free arm of the sewing machine is far easier than when I tried to do it with a wadded gambeson, I can tell you.
Next up:
I'll be finishing the second muslin of the shirt today, so Luc can fit it tonight when we visit him for his birthday. We'll also visit the sewing machine shop to pick up the presser feet I'm still missing, and maybe before we drive to Houten I've got some time to draft a pattern. I'm still deciding whether I'll fix the blazer block first, or draft a new jeans pattern. We'll see.
