Despite it requiring a horribly complicated way to cast on, toe-up socks are fast becoming more popular in the Janestarz household. It is perfect for self-striping yarn or other patterned yarn, because you can stop knitting the first sock just before you need to start the second sock. (This sounds funny, but if you want both feet to start with the same stripe, you can see where you need to stop knitting the leg so the second sock starts at the right stripe. There's no such luxury with top-down socks unless you want to squeeze into socks that are too short.)

Incidentally, these are also the first pair of socks I knitted for Eisirt. He's very happy with them but had expected them to be warmer. Today he wears them with a thin pair of cotton socks underneath. It will also please my cousin, who has spent at least an hour on Whatsapp trying to explain the concept of matching stripes to me. Or maybe it was because I tried to tell her that with top-down socks, it's wasteful to get your socks to match, you'll throw away so much (expensive) yarn.
Doortje helped with the posing for a picture. This picture, though slightly unsharp because of the horrible light we have today, was still too cute to not post.

The best part is that I still have enough of the self-striping yarn left to knit a second pair. I've bought a bunch of sock wool leftovers from another Ravelry friend (600 grams of assorted yarns!) and I've found a teal that matches with it. I've matched up as many sock yarn as I could and as soon as it made enough for a pair of socks, I put it in a bag. Planning sock knitting, it musn't get any weirder!
Since I kept track of my grams with this pair, I know exactly how much I need for contrast toes, contrast heel, and a 4 cm cuff, which boils down to 11 gram per sock. I use about 68 grams in total for a pair of socks, so weighing all the odds and ends was a great plan.
(ETA: This pair was 68 grammes, other pairs I've knitted also go between 72 and 84 grammes, depending on the pattern and yarn.)

And in more surprising news: I've continued on the Aragorn socks. More tomorrow, I hope the light will be better.
