Next month I will be at Booyah larp playing a Wildling again, and since it'll be November and the character's colours are grey, red and black I made some things for her.

Marywarmers

First up are the Marywarmers, a free fingerless mitten pattern from Ravelry. They were a joy to make: simple enough pattern but with a very interesting outcome. Incidentally, my first pair of mittens and the thumb gusset went really well.
What I'm still learning is the proper tension at the decreases, you can see there's a bit of a ladder down the central spine. But I think this is something only a lot of practice will teach me. For one of the gloves, the decreases were just at the end of one dpn and the start of another. For the other glove, I juggled the stitches around a bit, so it can't be the usual laddering I can get from end-of-dpn. This really has to do with the decreases.

They're by far not perfect, but they are really great and (because they're sock wool), slightly itchy. I am fine with sock wool on my feet, but anywhere above the ankle they can itch. I plan to invest in some really soft non-itchy wool tomorrow at the Brei-and-Haakdagen. Wollmeise maybe, or a really fine Rowan Merino. I've tried dunking sock wool in the freezer and in a soak of Eucalan, but neither method helps enough.

Windsong-1

The second item I made is a shawl I crocheted. Irma helped me set up the center grey part and showed me how to crochet "stokjes". I really, really dislike the fact that British English and American English crochet terms are different, so I might just refuse to use either.
As I progressed on the shawl I noticed the stitches were getting deformed, and then I ran out of black yarn. Total cost of this shawl was just 4 euro in Bollenbak yarns of questionable origin (the Marywarmers cost even less, just 1½ ball of Drops Fabel). I found out the red (which is slightly thicker yarn) is a 20% merino, 80% acrylic blend from Pengouin - and isn't on Ravelry. Since I don't want to stash acrylics, I used up the rest of the yarn on the fringe.

I really loved making these, and although crochet isn't really my thing (yet?) I can see options with cheap acrylic shawls like these for other characters. Perhaps future roleplaying characters might find themselfs toting a home-made shawl or scarf. If I ever do get to play Marianne again, she's the type for luxurious silk lace...

Wrapping up these two projects has made some room on my side table for other things. I've set up a cotton granny's square for make-up remover pads, and it also means I can pick up my Aragorns again soon.

Die handschoenen zijn leuk! Ik zie mijzelf niet mijn eigen sokken breien, maar dit is wel leuk om een keer dpn's uit te proberen.
