Last Friday we drove to Arnhem for a little bit of a party! Mom and Luc met us at the train station and we walked to the Rijnkade - the quay at the river running through Arnhem. It's a hub of hip restaurants and lounge bars. I still had a gift certificate for a dinner and we had selected an Indian restaurant to spend it at.

Although it has been 15 years since I last had Indian food, it was really great to eat out. We were set up at a table on the quay near the river, across the small one-way street from the restaurant. The weather was marvelous, and a slight breeze ruffled the parasol overhead. Each of us selected a chicken variety - from curry to tandoori - and we nommed the hot spicy dishes with vigor.

The red carpet was rolled out and a slideshow of pictures of the last schoolyear was displayed on the tv's mounted on the walls. There were petit-fours with 'Modevakopleiding' (Fashion / Tailor's school) badges on them.
Around eight pm, we were ushered into the back of the venue, where a podium was erected. Karin and José came up on stage and introduced each of the graduating students. First-years and second-years each got certificates for passing their years and a list of their grades. I am sure each and every one of us felt very special as we were called on stage to accept our certificates and a single rose to celebrate our efforts.
For the graduating third-years (two classes), each student was summarised in a little speech. Since this is an adult education, most of the people have busy lives, and it was no exception to hear the high praise from the teachers: how people had overcome difficulty with their health, their personal lives and their kids or jobs, and how hard everyone worked to get to this point. We all cheered and celebrated.

After the ceremony, there were drinks and snacks on the terrace outside, and the school door was opened to allow friends and family inside. The projects of the third-years were displayed in all their glory. The wonderful work of Patrick included an 18th century court gown, a 1912 evening dress and a wonderful greased lightning jacket in jeans fabric. Then followed the very three-dimensional work and wonderful tailoring of the other students. From lovely winter jackets with zippered pockets to gentleman's tailored shirts and ladies' splendid winter coats. Every piece was wonderful to see, and it showed us exactly how challenging the third year will be. The bar is raised even more, techniques will have to be perfected. We, the next batch of third-years, will have some pretty huge shoes to fill. I can't wait!
